A manual of English language exercises presented in a manner focused on the students. In the preface, the authors state that "we desire to put in front of our senior pupils a manual containing some of the critical ideas which educated people use when they discuss the worth of a book, poem, play, speech, pamphlet, or newspaper advertisement; at the same time we want passages for what has been called study in low-gear, in which we would include vocabulary and comprehension exercises, the making of summaries, and the writing of paraphrases. To combine these requirements we have compiled an anthology of authoritative writings about language and have added questions. The third ingredient is the linkage provided by chapters which we ourselves have these chapters which not only link but also provide a commentary in their own right for pupils who cannot understand the writings of the masters even in the relatively simple extracts which we have chosen."
