What happens to her when he takes over again? Southwest of Homer Book 2 The poacher is an ever-present threat to Ally as captain of Tore Olson's boat, Valley Girl. She doesn't understand why he refuses to go to the Alaska State Troopers. She agreed to help him by taking over the captain's chair when Tore broke his leg. She didn't sign on to evade a poacher, scramble to catch enough fish to make the balloon payment and dodge the big Swede. Fishing on Lower Cook Inlet southwest of Homer is stressful enough without the added tension of wondering how Rurik will react to her wanting to return as captain of the family fishing boat. Her younger brother is doing fine without her. Marriage has settled the man down and Ally fears it isn't fair to ask him to give up his new position as captain of the Arina. When she does turn the Valley Girl back to Tore, what is she going to do with herself?

Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here for 37 years, I have survived -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and live in a cabin. I used a fish wheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and only roadie. I cut firewood on shares, worked as a cocktail waitress, then as a paralegal for over 26 years. I hold the #80 press card as a reporter for the Copper Valley Views newspaper which ceased publication in the 1980s. I've been writing stories since junior high. Retired now, I can devote my time to what I love.
I came to Alaska by way of Arizona and California. I experienced the building of the pipeline up close. Then my second husband and I moved to Wasilla to get warm. It hardly ever drops past -25 in South Central Alaska. I never thought I would love it so much I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. I lost my first husband to alcohol. My second husband, the love of my life died as a result of disease. We were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years . I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with.

Romance, danger and drama in an Alaskan small town fishing fleet...
Ally has been asked to skipper the Valley Girl fishing trawler for Tore Olson while he recovers from a broken leg. If he doesn’t catch enough fish this season to make the payments on his boat then he could lose all he’s worked so hard for. But there’s a poacher out there somewhere, who seems to be specifically targeting his cod pots. Is it personal or just a co-incidence? Does someone want to destroy his livelihood? And if so, why? And was his broken leg an accident or deliberate sabotage? Who can he trust? The only compensation in all this is the girl he’s been able to entice onto the boat to finish the season for him. He’s got the hots for her, but what can he do about it with a broken leg?
I love all Cherime MacFarlane’s characters. They’re always basically decent with some very human failings that they have to overcome and they are mostly redeemable. So when the ‘baddie’ bursts on the scene suddenly, it is a bit shocking and you think, ‘Whoa! He’s REALLY BAD!’ Cherime MacFarlane also manages to vividly portray life on a small fishing trawler which rang a lot of bells for me, hanging out on a boat myself around small fishing trawler ports in the remote North West of Scotland. There only seemed to be one strange absence in reporting. There never seemed to be any gulls in evidence. Screaming overhead, following the boat, diving bothersomely around while prepping the fish etc. Nor any sea-mammals – such as cetaceans riding bow waves or seals lolling around on rocks. But I don’t know the conditions that pertain to Alaska, so maybe things are different out there…
This book is part of a series and although it can be read as a standalone, I suggest it is better read in order as a few ‘secrets’ are revealed in this one that could spoil earlier stories. It finishes a bit suddenly on a cliffhanger which left me feeling slightly frustrated, (despite the main emotional events of the story being wrapped up satisfactorily), but I could understand why the author had to do it, as a change of viewpoint is obviously on its way in the next episode. Now I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

An excellent and interesting read

What can I say, I love romance and fishing so this was a joy to read. The story takes place in Homer, one of the fishing communities in Alaska, where drama and other shady things occur onboard the Valley Girl. Aly is captain of the ship for the owner Tore, whom oddly enough broke his leg in deck. He suspects foul play and that someone wants him out of the picture. Poachers are harassing the small business of fishing vessels, but the Valley Girl is a prime target for sabotage. This story has me "hooked" from the beginning, yes I went there! This story has plenty of mystery and drama that will keep you guessing. I highly recommend this one!

Romance and Fishing, what could be better
A captivating romance set in majestic Alaska. Macfarlane is a prolific word weaver, her prose is exceptional providing detail into the setting and profound characters. Not to mention a hot romance, conflict and mystery. If you love a good romance this is definitely a book you should pick up.
