In this SECOND EDITION with extra documentary extracts Graham Darby describes the development of Italy from 1815, the Revolutions of !848, the role of the key figures in the unification process of 1859-60, the completion of that process and its aftermath. A special feature of this book is the critical evaluation of the historiography of the subject with particular reference to the concept of the Risorgimento.
An excellent, analytical, and easy to read IB/A-Level text on the unification of Italy. Much more accessible in following the themes rather than the personalities of the period and, although a chronology is more difficult to obtain than from Andrina Stiles' reader, the thematic approach allows for much greater focus on the 'key' issues. Discussion of the historiography of Italian history since 1860, and a dismantling (along argumentation outlined by Denis Mack-Smith) of the Risorgimento were very useful additions to the text. Recommended for students studying 19th Century European History.
