The Comfort Women

The Comfort Women" is about Meian Ling, a former Chinese comfort woman. It begins in with her village childhood and its abrupt end on the day she, and her family, were deceived by a Chinese woman. The woman cooperated with the Japanese army, supplying it with young comfort women for their ‘stations’. The story intertwines her adopted daughter talks with the old Meian, slipping into her earlier life and flashing into the subsequent legal action she and others took against the Japanese government. Young Meian suffered terrible experiences in this hell, raped daily by queues of Japanese soldiers. Years later, in her twenties and against the odds, she escapes her ‘station’ and returns home to find out rejection and hatred for what she went through. Already an older woman, having suffered so much for so long, Meian starts a new life in the city of Nanjing.

Habe das Buch abgebrochen, weil ich die Schilderung der brutalen Grausamkeiten, die diesen Frauen widerfahren sind, nicht mehr ertragen konnte.

What a heartbreaking book. It's horrible to see what humans are capable of - and we're not talking about something that has happened many many centuries ago, but only in recent history.

Ruth Hallo describes in a very emotional and detailed way the suffering, pain and horrors of the poor women who had to suffer for most of their lives. I hope that someday the world will know their stories and that justice will win.

Warning: the writing is quite explicit (verbal and physical abuse).

Unendlich traurig und entsetzlich zu lesen zu welchen Gräueltaten Menschen fähig sind. Sehr explizite Schilderungen der (sexuellen) Gewalttaten.
Das Buch liefert einen Einblick in die panasiatische Geschichte, die man so niemals für möglich gehalten hätte und man lernt darüber hinaus ein wenig über die Geschichte und Politik Chinas.

My thoughts & feelings have no weight to what these poor women have experienced. I feel so so so sorry for you all. Beyond sorry! I cannot imagine what you went through. Again, so so sorry. The Japanese were at war. It was a world war at the time. But this!!! Wow! No words. How ‘brave’ the Japanese soldiers were ….. not!!!! Pathetic more like.

Harrowing and heartbreaking

Tahle knížka je prostě pecka. Je to přesně ten typ dílka, které čtete s otevřenou pusou, hltáte každou stránku a nemůžete se odtrhnout. Já se od "Utěšitelek" odlepit nedokázala. Mej-anin příběh byl tak neuvěřitelně smutný, že jsem ji prostě nedokázala opustit. Nechápala jsem, že měla sílu vstát po všech těch kopancích a doteď jsem ohromená její chutí k životu. Já bych na jejím místě tak silná nedokázala být. Osud těchto otrokyň je srovnatelný s oběťmi koncentračních táborů, jenže o těch se mluví, staví se jim památníky a vystavují se fotografie. Je hrozné, že na Utěšitelky je používaný zcela jiný metr. Kde je spravedlnost? Jsem ráda, že jsem si tuto děsivou a nekonečně smutnou knížku koupila a je mi líto, že ji zná tak málo lidí. Dala mi úplně jiný pohled na svět. Kdybych mohla, nejradši bych "Utěšitelky" vám všem vnutila. Jejich příběh nesmí zapadnout prachem! Lidi musí vědět, jaké hrůzy ty holčičky protrpěly. Zaslouží si nebýt zapomenuty! Tohle je kniha, která se po dočtení neztratí v knihovničce, protože na ni budete ještě dlouho myslet. Nějaká "Gejša" se může jít zahrabat! Tohle je opravdu tragický životní příběh, podle kterého by měli natočit celovečerní film!

סיפורן של נשים סיניות, קוריאניות וטיוואניות שבמהלך מלחמת העולם השניה נכפתה עליהן זנות ע"י הצבא היפני. הספר מתאר את קורותיהן של 2 נשות ניחומים, מסען בשבי, מסכת ההתעללות שעברו, וחייהן לאחר השיחרור. ההתכחשות של הסביבה הקרובה, ההתכחשות של ממשלת יפן לעוולות וכישלון עמותות ופעילים למען זכויות אזרח לדאוג לכך שממשלת יפן תשא באחריות ותפצה את הניצולות שעדין חיות.

לקח לי זמן מה לקרוא את הספר גם בגלל התכנים הקשים וגם בגלל מבנה הספר שנע בין העבר להווה של הניצולות ושל המחברת של הספר. התיאור מזעזע בחלקים שבהם מתמקדים בחיים בשבי. אני חושבת שהחלק המיותר בספר מתמקד בחיים בסין בעת מהפכה של מאו ובעת מהפכת התרבות.

Kniha je velice zajímavá svým obsahem, který vypráví o osudech několika tisíců Číňanek (Korejek, Vietnamek i Japonek), které se staly sexuálními otroky japonských vojáků během 2. sv. války. V knize najdeme dvě dějové linie - jedna popisující období během války, druhá se odehrává v současnosti při soudním procesu o odškodném za toto utrpení. Způsob zpracování už tak zajímavý nebyl, především soudní líčení jsem mimoděk přeskakovala a četla jen to, "co se stalo".
