Cowboys and Angels #18
Healing the Hooligan
Rachel Denton has spent most of her life moving from town to town while caring for her single father. They’ve been welcomed to Creede, Colorado with a string of bad luck that has her wanting to move on quickly, until an accident puts her in the path of someone that sees her potential and changes her life. With the help of new friends, Rachel puts her caring nature to use, working at the clinic with Doctor JT. Rachel suddenly finds herself wanting to put down roots when an unlikely patient makes her see herself and Creede differently.
Freddie “Dutch” Holan was sent to Creede, to return the Dobbs sisters to the Whyos in New York City, but instead found that you don’t always have to follow the same path. Torn between the life he’s always known and the life he wants, Dutch finds he can no longer walk the line. He must choose a side. Lucky for him, there’s a new nurse in Creede, one that is currently trying to forge her own way.
Everyone knows that strange things happen in Creede. So would it be so odd for two strangers looking for direction to find that their paths merge, maybe with a little heavenly help?

Healing the Hooligan is a slightly different story than I was accustomed to from the Cowboys & Angels series. It’s definitely a slower feel to the story, and it’s about two couples rather than the focus on just one with characters we’ve known from the series. And there is a reason for that. We met Kara and Nessa in Captivating the Carpenter. Kara found her love, but we learned that Nessa had left her love back in New York. Dutch was planning to marry Nessa, her father encouraged it and she kept her true love a secret. When Kara and Nessa fled New York Dutch was sent to bring them back… only that was never his intent. Now the town and Kara believe that Nessa and Dutch are a couple – and they both loudly disavow that idea every time it’s mentioned. They view each other as friends, almost family but not a loved one. And Nessa has plans… plans that may put her at odds with her sister. And that is the secondary story in Healing the Hooligan… for Dutch is that hooligan who is falling for a lovely new nurse and has to turn his grey area life around and choose a side… good or not so good. Because a danger bigger than the one that just met Death is heading for Creede and no one is ready for it.
In many ways Nessa’s situation overtakes Dutch and Rachel’s romance. Rachel is a sweetheart, a talented nurse and she cares so much for the man she’s not certain is really a good guy, but even if he isn’t at first she’s convinced that he is the best man for her. I’ll be frank in that it’s not easy to get a solid feel for Dutch. Instinctively I felt that he is a changing man, turning from what he was into something he feels is worthy of Rachel. It’s obvious that there are things happening in Creede that he is a part of, and also that he is doing his best to protect the townsfolk as well. So, Dutch is very much a mysterious character.
I enjoyed this story, and because of the two stories being told it did move at a slower pace for me. Dutch and Rachel make a perfect pair, and I’ve a feeling we’ll be seeing more of Dutch as time moves this series along. The reason that Nessa was so prominent in Healing the Hooligan when it wasn’t her romance is that this story is a lead in to a new series called Derelicts & Debutantes. The first story of that new series, Nessa, will give us answers that are left up in the air in this story. To really understand and enjoy this one I’d strongly suggest that you read Captivating the Carpenter first. I’ll always suggest reading a series in order, but this time I do believe that it’s important to know Kara’s story beforehand.

Not my favorite
I was so looking forward to reading this story especially since I'd already read "Nessa" . I am frustrated because it was disjointed and confusing. The tale was less about Dutch and Rachel than it was about Nessa and why she needed to go to New York. The reader never clearly understands why there was an explosion. In the attempt to create mystery and intrigue key ideas are left out or skipped over. The relationship just happens. Where was the emotion? Dutch is supposedly reformed but how? Why? What has he really been involved in? Who is Jack and why is he in the story? Etc. And the proofreading errors. . .ugh. This feels like a rush job and left me dissatisfied and disappointed.

Boring
The characters were boring, the story was boring and the couple had no chemistry. This is the same writer that wrote Wooing the Widow, which is actually one of my least favorite books in the series- this one was worse. I couldn’t finish it. Nothing about the story was engaging and Rachel, much like Nora who just angers me when she appears, was a wet blanket. I’m sad because I think Dutch could have been an awesome lead character and Nessa had a lot of potential from when we met them both in Kara’s book, but they are both so lackluster in this tale and makes me not want to read Nessa’s story. I might be skipping this author’s part of the series in the future.

Nice Story
This is book 18 in the Cowboys and Angels series. It continues after Kara's story but it's not Nessa's story but rather Dutch, who followed the girls from NY, and a new character of Rachel. It turns out Rachel is the daughter of the man who was pulled off the roof in Aedan's story and broke his ankle. The angel of this story is the father of the girls whose death precipitated their trip to Creede. It also turns out Nessa will be the launch for a new series which I will have to try after completing this series.

Hooligan
A redeeming story. Creed is a town where things aren't always the way they seem. Sometime you have to do wrong to do right. This is well written. This series has been enjoyable and I can not wait for the next one.

Rachel and Dutch
Nefarious forces are at work in Creede again and they try to kill Dutch but Rachel helps him at Doc IT's office. He falls for her but can she love a man like him? - Babs

💞 Rachel and Dutch 💞
I loved the redemptive story of Freddie, otherwise known as Dutch! Rachel was his saving grace and he made such a turnaround in his life. Very sweet story.
Can’t wait for Nessa’s story to come out! Not sure I can wait that long 😁❤️

Loved this book. It is somewhat different from the other Cowboys and Angels books. Some of the good guys aren’t totally good.

Cowboys and Angels
Healing the Hooligan by Sara Jolene was full of drama but it was confusing as to what was actually going on. The romance of Dutch and Rachel was sweet.

Good read
Freddie / Dutch and Rachel (JT's nurse)
I enjoyed reading this captivating story. Although it seemed to be more about Nessa than Rachel. This story has a satisfying HEA.
