Joel F. Wells was a best-selling author and the editor of The Critic, a literary Catholic magazine. His best-known book was "Grim Fairy Tales for Adults: Parodies of the Literary Lions," published in 1967. In it, Mr. Wells skewered both time-honored fairy tales and modern literary writers.

Other titles included children's books and self-help works about raising teenagers, stress and self-esteem. He also wrote numerous humor pieces and scores of book reviews for publications including the Chicago Tribune Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic and others.
