I got these as a present or I wouldn't really be reading them. I love eerie stories for kids such as Coraline or the Tales of Terror series, so I understand why someone nostalgic for these would recommend them. Unfortunately this series, to me, has the same problem as most American horror films. Jumpscares and generic characters over atmosphere and eerieness. Some of the stories are clearly just film ideas adapted to young readers and for encouraging reading these little books seem very efficient. The chapters are incredibly short and always end on suspense or a cliffhanger to keep you going. I don't know what I would have thought of these as a kid, but to be honest I wasn't much of a reader myself and preferred keeping adults busy for hours reading through much longer chapters for me instead. And books without illustrations aren't really much fun anyway, are they? Overall, enjoyable enough, although I think even for kids a little simplistic and repetitive. I mean does everyone have dark hair, green eyes, annoying siblings, friends who always try to scare you and parents who don't ever listen?

Say Cheese and Die 2/5
A bit basic but overall the most... normal(?) one.

Vampire Breath 1/5
This was a really wild ride and not in a good way.

A Shocker on Shock Street 1/5
One of those things where you know it is going towards a disappointing twist after the first page and just wait until you get there.

One Day at Horrorland 1.5/5
Kind of torn. At this stage, the formula of these books really wore out but overall a lot more consistent than the previous two.

Don't Feed the Vampire 2.5/5
Actually really enjoyed this. Interactive books always deserve an extra star for fun and some of the storylines were really enjoyable, even if others were just really silly.

Return of the Mummy 2/5
Not bad. I liked the little who-to-trust element and that it did without most of the lame jumpscares the others did.

Night of the Living Dummy 2 2/5
Who ever thought buying a kid a creepy dummy was a good idea? Some serious childhood angst and abandonment going on here though.

The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena 2/5
A Tintin reference later and a lot of snow at least this had some unexpected turns. Who thought he would fit in a suitcase.

Attack of the Graveyard Ghouls 1/5
What did those animals do to harm you?

The Haunted Mask 1.5/5
Very basic and much-done concept in an okay way I guess.
