Adrian Ring is in a coma. Shot by a traitor in his midst, he has slipped into an existence where his consciousness is neither alive, nor dead. He has gone to the Other Side. Bolstered by the presence of the friends he has lost since 'that day,' Adrian embarks on exploring this frozen landscape of dreams, and nightmares. Gilbert and Gavin bring him to caches of supplies, locations of potential friends and enemies, and perhaps most of all… They bring him to their own pasts. Transported through time and space, Adrian sees a hunting trip first-hand with Gavin, and then relives one of Gilbert's worst firefights during his Vietnam era. Then, he sees something that hasn't happened yet, but will. And what he sees will change the world forever. Welcome to The Other Side. The Other Side also contains the third and final part of Meanwhile in Utah by AUD collaborator Josh Green.
I am the creator and author of Tesser: A Dragon Among Us as well as Elmoryn's The Kinless Trilogy, Colony Lost, Adrian's Undead Diary and the Darkness of Diggory Finch.
I've gone to a LOT of college. I've got a Business degree as well as a Psychology degree, and I've done the full program at the school of hard knocks. I've been a printing press operator, bouncer, purchasing agent, bodyguard, customer service representative, mental health counselor, and more. I can write about weird shit because I've done weird shit. Trust me.
I call the wonderful state of New Hampshire my home, but I love to travel. I love to read, write, play role playing games, miniatures games, video games, and Magic: The Gathering. When I find the time to be active, I like to hike, play basketball, and play football. I am married to a wonderful woman, and together we have two wonderful daughters.
The Other Side, (Volume 6 of Tales Series) is yet, another excellent edition of several short stories, providing helpful insights and information regarding where AUD is heading. It is nice having supplemental short stories, as they fill in peripheral questions popping up here and there as I listened to the whole (one right after the other) AUD series.
Book 10 is available for reading now, however, I am holding out for audible to become available, as listening to books in this genre makes for better graphic visualization. On that note, hopefully audible will make book 10 available sooner rather than later, :)
Finally, It is pretty cool that as I listened to the last short story, I was reminded of one of my all time favorite novels- Stephen King's "The Stand,"and how this band of survivors also had to fight against evil in their plight to get to their representation of "God," which was found in an African American older adult named Mother Abigail. Along the way, some in this band fell, becoming victims after giving into the devil's (as represented in character Randall Flagg) forked tongued promises, and were made to pay the ultimate price. . . sell your soul to the devil, or suffer both a physically and mentally torturous death.
Much thanks to both author/creator, Mr. Chris Philbrook and narrator, Mr. James Anderson Foster! You guys have provided numerous enjoyable hours away from reality, immersed in the comfortable and wonderful imaginary worlds of multiple series.
And I really like this one. It was a return to form for me; back in the mind of Adrian Ring in a very meaningful way. Back in the core story in a meaningful way.
It also let me tell stories that fans have asked for since 2012 or even earlier. The Other Side is creepy, funny, and I think, possibly the best of all the novellas I've written for the Tales series.
The first story, by Chris Philbook, was actually kind of boring to me. But I really enjoyed the second story, by Josh Green. I've enjoyed the earlier stories by him as well. Not a lot of zombies, but good survivor vs survivor interaction among several groups.
A look into Adrian's life during his coma. Being with his old mentor Gilbert and kick ass friend Gavin who are taking Adrian around areas where stockpiles are still hidden and that will be needed in the future battles against evil. They can do things in this "life" as they are more spirit than physical beings. They relive a horrific battle Gilbert was in while in Vietnam. This was a chance to see Adrian be closer to Gilbert. Loved it! The other hand it tells us about people trying to do well, and due to circumstances, some people get in with straight up jerks who just want to cause havoc and death, than make a good community for themselves. This is a story that people are in the beginning of the zompoc, and having dreams of a great savior in the east. A man named Spencer believes in the dreams and people that will be good. Evil comes at Spencer's and other peoples Safe Refuge. His name is Chad, and believes people should be giving him most of their food and water. But someone means to put a stop to Chad's do or die ways this time!
Two short stories, the second one, set in Utah, is my favorite. While the first was ok, it was a but disjointed due to being written while the character was comatose and on the other side. Not bad but I preferred the clarity of the Utah story.
I guess I need to read some of Chris Philbrook's fantasy books to see if they are any good. I figure he must put all of his talent and brain power on the AUD books, he can't have anything left for his other genres. Just a thought. READ HIS BOOKS !
This is the lowest I think I ever rated an AUD book. The first haven't wasn't that great. The second story " Meanwhile in Utah" was actually very good and probably the only part worth reading.
