Organized but somewhat repetitive I found. Could have been condensed. I found my mind wandering and the theme of the book not that consistent other than "the republics are fighting for recognition".

It was perfect timing when I read this book.

It came out in 1990 just before the Soviet Union broke up - and I was reading it as it did.

This was a great look at the nationalities inside the Soviet Union and the problems they would cause Gorbachev - and they did, just as predicted.

This book really rounded out my knowledge of the Soviet Union's national groups just as they were all coming into focus. Reading it now is a big spoiler because most of what was predicted came true, but it's still interesting to see how these people groups were developing into new nations.
