Reviews the research in language development from nursery through secondary school. Topics range from the formal aspects of development (syntax, semantics, phonology) to the textual aspects (oral and written discourse), and consider the impact of the child's cognitive and socio-cognitive changes. Current and potential applications of linguistics, psycho- and sociolinguistics are examined to understand language processes and to develop interventions at school. Aimed at students, researchers and professionals in a wide range of disciplines concerned with language development and language use.
