Nearly a decade has passed since Kim's mother was taken so suddenly. What remains is a hollow, unstable life of self-isolating misery, punctuated by callous mistreatment in and out of school. However, among the anticipated apathy, a spike of supernatural oddities catches her attention. Bubbling voices, visions of shadow people and strange dreams fester a mystery that seems to go much deeper than simply paranormal. These events appear to know her. When the abuse at home escalates to the extreme, an elderly man reveals himself and offers a vague deal. Revenge. Though, cryptic hints of some connection with her family name, brew questions and doubt surrounding her mother's death and father's past.
Honestly, when I was told that this is a book was meant for middle school children and young adults, I wasn’t expecting the realistic depictions of abuse nor the blatant display of gore & mayhem wrought by the characters. The plot’s intricacies are a joy to discover, though I was still left with a few unanswered questions even at the end of the book (maybe I need to get a hold of the prequels & the sequel too). If there was something to gripe about, then it would be that this is not a book you can finish through in one go (my bad habit hit a wall with this one). And some of the transition scenes left me scratching my head as to what just happened. But apart from those, the words on the digital pages painted a clear picture in my mind of what was happening in the story.
All in all, Vengeance: Children of Faust is an enjoyable read with a few minor annoyances such as the whole point of Joey’s character, the eternal curtain (in this book, at least) on Sin’s & Crism’s story, and the few confusing transitions. I would recommend this book to any teen who wants to dip their toes in the waters of literary horror mysteries, and I’d rate this a 4 out of 5.
Vengeance: Children of Faust is primarily a young adult horror and the first book in a series. It's got lots of violence, is very gory, and is kind of freaky (as it should). If you're a fan of Venom, This Darkness Mine (by Mindy McGinnis), and the 2nd season finale of Supernatural, you will probably enjoy this book. Vengeance follows a teenage girl who comes from an abusive household and who deals with horrible bullies at school. The amount of suffering she endures is relentless. So, what does she need? VENGEANCE (Hello, chapter title!). A scary creature that has been haunting her house offers her a deal. If she accepts, she can have all the power it will take to defeat her bullies. Does she take it? (Read and see!). This was a wild ride. Lots of action. Lots of descriptions. Chris Ulm has a unique way of describing things that sets him apart from other authors. Despite its length (400 pages/24hr audio), there was hardly a moment when something interesting wasn't happening. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves violent horror. If you enjoy stories featuring dark beings and battles over souls, Vengeance is for you.
Right from the very start your emotions are put into high gear as Kim tries to navigate the school halls while trying to avoid her tormentors. Unfortunately, she is unable to do so and the torment begins. Your emotions are then ramped up even more as you see her struggles through her own eyes. Because of this, I believe this story is going to resonate with a large number of people who have been bullied in their life. Then the story takes a strange turn that keeps the reader unsuspecting and guessing, thus captivating and holding the reader's attention the entire time. Aside from some editing issues and being heavily detailed the story was excellent. I truly enjoyed reading it and looked forward to reading more of this Author's work.
