We are long time users of Apologia, and have absolutely LOVED all of the texts that we have used from both the worldview and science streams, so it is with the deepest sadness that I am writing this review, but I feel so strongly about it that I cannot let it pass.
It isn't all bad, (and the bits that are correct, in true Apologia style are excellent), but enough of it is wrong that if followed you can be guaranteed to experience health problems, and if you don't know which areas aren't correct then that is where the danger lies when teaching others.
I purchased this text and the student manuals very excited to teach this class to my middle and high school students. Having read through the text in detail, I was devastated to find that despite being a recently published (2022) book, so much of it contains quite old science that has been long disproven with new (or even not so new) studies. In fact much of the science taught in the text is what has lead to the Western world's chronic obesity, infertility and disease problems, and whilst this science is continued to be taught, we have little to no hope of overcoming it.
I have had to do a significant amount of work to make the text useable, current and accurate, and have to discuss with my children which aspects of the course are now outdated, showing them the research and studies that contradict the text and selecting age appropriate books or extracts from books to detail the current science. This will extend the course out for us by about a year I think.
Unfortunately the "everything in moderation" approach isn't scientific, nor is it biblical. But it does very much fit inline with the marketing approach from big food and big Pharma. While texts are written to appease them, the reality will never be accurately portrayed. I would really hate to see Apologia continue along the popular scientism narrative and hope that it ends with this edition.
