Rochester in Old Photographs

Rate this book
With its fairytale castle and impressive cathedral, its beautifully refurbished High Street and its Dickensian connections, Rochester has become one of the main tourist cities of the United Kingdon. Brenda Purle invites the reader on a trip back in time to view the city as it was seen through the eyes if photographers of bygone years. The Castle and cathedral are, naturally well represented in the illustrations, as are the historic bridge and High Street, public utilities, churches, charities and schools, sporting events, VE Day celebrations and the more local celebrations of the Dickens festival. The author, Brenda Purle, has lived in Rochester since 1947. She was a member of the the staff of Rochester Libary for 31 years, the last 13 of which being spent in charge of a large local collection. Those 13 years place her in the unique postiton of being able to separate myth from historical fact. Its hoped that these pages will not only revive some happy memories for the older generation, but also create an intrest in the area for the new.
