… and who would think of pen & ink as a novel story? Harrison West. That’s who. Glad he did. WOW! education | entertainment and darn interesting.
Did you know there are stationery junkies? And forget sharing or loaning your pen. Certain Death. Poor nib is prone to suicide under pressure opposed to your own. We … train our fountain pens by touch, wrist & arm angle, sensitivity of pen’s paper and OH! this little book has so much more. I had the impulse, as the last page flipped, really…to flash to the fountain pen store and experience what Harrison promises, “I’ll teach you all about the art of pens so that you can use, understand, enjoy & select the best pen for you.”
Shoes, who knew fountain pens, like feet: hand-size matters. What else to consider buying a fountain pen: handwriting size and what type | style of writing you do. All subject to training your pen — by you. That’s why nib cringes @ guest users.
Just a peek...
Large hand — long pen small hand — shorter barrels | smaller pens
Now if you don’t know what a barrel is, Harrison will tell you. And you’ll meet Lilliput “merely five inches in length…”
Handwriting styles...
Intricate characters = fine or extra fine nib for calligraphy Western script = broad nib but caution for ink pooling and bleeding. (Learned the whats and whys of that.)
I’m smitten by Parker and Schaeffer thanks to Lewis Waterman the highfalutin, because of a deal gone bad, he invented | improved upon the fountain pen with his “capillary principle to steady the flow of ink…”
This little book is punched for page turning. The perfect gift for the hard to-buy-for. We all have one.
Perfect gift? A copy of “The Love of the Ink: A Book About Fountain Pens” by Harrison West and a beginners, intermediate, or expert penman’s pen, wrapped & bowed. I want one.
Good job Harrison. Now, onward to “The Cigar Cutter” for my grandson.
I have been using fountain pens since 5th grade and here at 71, I continue to use my fountain pen daily for all my writing. Not only that , I write in script, another lost art to many. I have journals that go back to the 50, 60's. I have put them on the computer also. My oldest granddaughter will inherit my journals and fountain pens. Again thank you for the great read!! Paul aka The Mayor/PDiddy 🤠☕️👍
Although brief the book is succinct and provides a lot of information. It pleasantly suggests that there is a lot of enjoyment to be had on the world of fountain pens and provides guidance on how to enjoy that works and get the most out of fountain pens. Not at all dogmatic.
This book is short but full of focused information on fountain pens and paper. I am new to owning fountain pens and I found a tremendous amount of useful info in this book. I read it on kindle unlimited, but would pay for a permanent reference copy.
O enjoy collecting fountain pens a writing with them. I found this book to be very helpful. It is brief and to the point. It also is easy to comprehend.
Decided to read this as I’ve recently organized my junk drawers and souvenir boxes into a pretty respectable collection of pens. This book was easy to read and provided good vocabulary for working with fountain pens.
This book made retrieve a dozen fountain pens I hadn’t used in a couple of years I followed the cleaning instructions and now they are all writing like new with various inks and an array of papers.
