Turner's text analyzes the structure of sociological theories, in essence becoming an encyclopedia of sociological thought. It groups sociological thought into approaches including functional, evolutionary or bio-ecological, conflict, exchange, interactionist, structuralist, and critical theorizing. However, the updated text avoids criticism of theory found in previous editions.
