This is what is missing from the I Can Read books of the 1980s and later. It is very detailed - amazingly artistic, even considering the odd color palette. But that's part of the appeal - art isn't always just the boring full-on colors of today's books. The stories are odd, not simplistic all-day happiness or quickly resolved conflicts. There are subtleties and layers. It's probably not a book for everyone, but for those discerning readers, it's just brilliant.

This is an odd story. The illustrations, the narrative, and the theme is just odd. Our girls thought the story was interesting, but it's not a favorite.
