Tristan and Isolde: Illuminated Manuscripts, from a manuscript of The Romance of Tristan

Rate this book
This book is illustrated with miniatures taken from the Roman de Tristan, a French manuscript of the early 15th century, one of the numerous treasures of the National Library of Austria. They describe the episodes of the story of Tristan and Isolde -- hence the title of the book.

The pictures in this book are fascinating but the text is a very bad translation. Some sentences made no sense and it would take you through part of the tale then leave you hanging, jumping to the next tale. It was still an interesting book, with a bit of detective work on the original illuminated manuscript's history and commissioning owner. The gilding on the printing is a bit clunky, and the miniatures are not so good as the very best, but still fun.
