Howard Chapelle provides a great resource in this book - Boatbuilding. Since the original publication date of 1941, some materials have changed, but many of the basic premises about boating (and sailing) have not. Also, from a historical viewpoint, anyone who becomes involved in older wooden craft, from either an ownership or restoration viewpoint, will appreciate the details of construction that are offered.

The uses of this book can be varied. For example, I had a 45 horsepower diesel engine and was wondering what this engine would adequately power. One of the larger workboat in the book was 45-feet long and only required a 30-40 hp engine. It also has great references to traditional sailing and working craft.

Enjoy!

This is the go-to book on classic wooden boat building. I, however, found it very hard to follow the few sections that were well covered and was severely disappointed in the poor coverage of other areas. You may be better off reading books on each aspect of building, individually. I certainly will do just that.
