When the pursuit begins…no one is safe. A missing brother. A lost sister. A desperate police officer. And a determined husband. All facing one challenge—escaping danger—while staying alive.
Veteran police officer Angel Martinez has been searching for her missing brother for almost twenty years. Year after year, each trail ran cold and the clues dried up. With only a few dangerous, unwilling witnesses left, will John’s kidnapping ever be solved, or is her hope of finding her brother lost for good?
Dr. Ahmed Diaz had no more reason to live—or so he thought. He’d lost everything, and everyone he cared about turned against him. Strolling into the woods to end his life led to a stunning turn of events that would change him for good—and lead him into a path he didn’t know existed.
Stephanie Martinez was angry with God for letting her brother, John, get kidnapped. So she lived life the crazy way she wanted—until the man she loved changed into a person she didn’t recognize. Now, faced with danger and more challenges than she can handle, will she turn to the God she abandoned, or give up any chance of a normal life and plunge headlong into hopelessness?
HUNTER is Book Twelve in The New Rulebook & Pete Zendel Christian Suspense Series by award winning USA Today bestselling author Joy Ohagwu.
Who doesn't like to curl up with a good book? I certainly have, for as long as I could remember. Next to books, I loved movies just as much, especially if it had action and suspense. No surprise then that I'm now writing romantic suspense, and inspirational stories! I'm grateful to the Lord Jesus for His undeserved mercy and grace. I earned a Masters' Degree in International Affairs from American University, Washington DC; and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Professionally, I've been honored with multiple awards for pioneer academic research, student leadership and overall excellence. I'm a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers(ACFW) organization. I pen stories during evenings, weekends, and whenever the food takes too long to cook. Despite the many hurdles I've faced in life, God has been crazy faithful! I live in the beautiful State of Maryland.

Hunted continues the story of Pete Zendel, a dynamic pastor. Suspense and excitement open the book and continue throughout. The story delves into family relationships and God’s plan for their lives. The main characters are Christians and their lives reflect their beliefs. The characters are so well written that I could see them being my friends and neighbors. The worship scenes touched my heart. While reading Hunted, I got so engrossed in the story that I actually felt like I was part of the book. My emotions were all over the place as the story unfolded. I really enjoyed the book. This is the fourth book in the Pete Zendel Series. The book can be read as a standalone, but it is better to read the books in series order. I received an advanced copy of the book, and I am so thankful that I had the chance to read the book before it was released. Since I have read all of the books in the series, I preordered the book in November 2018. I wanted to get a copy for my library as soon as the book became available. I think that Ms. Ohagwu is one of the best Christian Suspense writers that I have ever read.
Joy has written another great suspense book that shows God works in ways to protect His children. This is not a stand alone book, and neither does it end here. I am left eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series. This book is also strong on the importance of having a good family support network. Joy always gives the reader some very good things to think about concerning their own walk and faith in God and His work. It always makes me evaluate if I am allowing God to work in my life. Thank you Joy for another wonderful story. I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but have chosen to freely give my honest opinion.
I'm conflicted with the rating, so I'll settle for three stars. I thought, since this said book 1, that it was the first one to read. After having an abundance of confusion while reading it, I see now there are some books before this one that should set the stage, so to speak. So, please don't call it book 1 if it's NOT book one. I feel like I'm in a time warp, like the Star Wars movies.
Moving on, the pros: This is good, clean fiction. There is some suspense, but not so much as to keep me awake at night. It's easy to read. You can put it down, and pick it up without too much flipping back to see what happened last. It has several interesting story lines that intertwine and offer some cliff hangers. Several excellent themes keep up the reader's interest. There is escape from human trafficking, hope, redemption, forgiveness, faith, all the things that make for good Christian fiction. Depending on your reading preferences, "Christian fiction" can be either a pro or a con. I put it as a "pro."
The cons: Because I thought I was starting at the beginning, the ending was not satisfying. No loose ends were tied up, because I was supposed to already know how the characters got to where they are now. Sometimes the writing was sophomoric. Christian fiction (the negative aspect) writers rely too much on cliche Christianese to make their point. If a character is facing difficulty or uncertainty, you can be assured they will go to church and get the answers they need from the pastor. The written prayers and sermons have eye-rolling terms (hedge of protection) that are best left for real situations, and not fiction. The plots were sometimes unbelievably unrealistic. The situations were not, but the outcomes often were. There's a lot I still don't "get" even after reading the book. The title is a good example. Who is the hunter, and what/why/ where is he? I don't see the relevance of the poem, the mysterious letters, the computer hacking. Nothing was solved.
This was the first book I read by this author. She isn't a bad writer, but I would have been more satisfied with fewer plot holes.
I found the story a little bit hard to get into, but once I did I really enjoyed the story. I wasn't sure what the beginning had to do with the story, and when it finally came to the place where the beginning met in the story, it was so short I wasn't sure why it was the beginning of the story. I understand about the poem, and this is where they learn more about the poem, but the poem wasn't much of an issue in the entire story. It wasn't until the ending that I understood the double meaning for the title - I'd forgotten The Hunter from the other book.
Some of the Christian theme in the story takes a Charismatic bent, but overall I liked the sermons and that the story was very "Christian" overall. The faith of the characters is hard to find in a lot of "Christian" fiction today. I appreciate that Joy didn't shy away from that as so many other authors are doing. There wasn't any language or even slang that I remember - I really appreciate that. There was romance, but not any sexual bend to the story - again, I appreciate that as well. When did Christian authors decide that we as Christian readers wanted more sex in our stories??? I appreciate finding an author who doesn't feel like she has to kow tow to the majority. Thank you, Joy.
Hunter, written by Joy Ohagwu, is an inspirational suspense story in the Pete Zendel Series. Having read several of this author's books before I was looking forward to reading Hunter and was not disappointed. The author has written a beautiful tale of loss, disappointment, hope, faith, forgiveness, and family. There are several sermon-like messages in the book that give scripturally based instruction, hope, and encouragement to the reader. Woven throughout all the suspense and occasional edge-of-the-seat tension is a strong faith in God, the ultimate source of power for victory in life's struggles. The characters are strong, vibrant, intense, engaging, and evocative and readers are quickly caught up in and compelled by their lives and their stories. It was interesting to see characters from this author's other books. I am looking forward to reading more in this new series from this talented author. I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
Joy Ohagwu continues to build the suspense in this latest installment of the series. I have read all of the books so far in the series and feel like the characters have become friends. I had to force myself to put the book down to finish later so I could get much needed rest to function at work the following day. This is a very gripping story of how God is working all the time for the good of His people. Unfortunately, the ending is another cliff hanger and we have to wait (patiently), for Joy Ohagwu to bring us the next installment to find out what will happen next. (Please hurry). If you enjoy Christian suspense, then this series will definitely draw you in. It is not a stand alone and if you try to read it without reading the previous books, you will be a bit lost. I received a complimentary copy of this wonderful story, but have chosen to freely give my honest opinion of the book.
AMAZING! I enjoyed this book by 1 of my favorite authors. It was fun catching up with characters from the previous The New Rulebook series as well as meeting new ones that I'm sure we'll see again in future books in this series. The sermons were insightful, i felt like I was a part of the community as the storyline drew me in, & suddenly just when I thought I had figured out the story, it would twist and travel in a new direction! I highly recommend this book! Can't wait for the next book in this series. I would also suggest reading The New Rulebook series for a background of the characters.
Joy’s books are getting better and better! This was a page turner! We follow Angel’s search for her missing brother - over 20 years! And learn that God has a plan bigger than we could imagine. There were so many things that resonated with me about the Christian life … how God gives us a job, and then the power to accomplish it. It’s not about us. And how we need to be looking for what God wants us to do. And how our failures and sins can remind us instead of what God has done for us. I found myself wanting to share these lessons with those around me – God opportunities! I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.
The New Rulebook from Joy Ogwu is a great suspense series based on Christian principles. The story is exciting but also moving and faith building. The story makes you think about your own life, what place God and His promises have in your life and how you deal with them. The series has great characters that you get to know well. The story is very exciting and captivating until the end. Joy knows how to keep the tension in and always give it a great twist. The series is a great example of how to live the Christian life. Some fragments are so real and moving that they touch your heart deeply.
I finished reading this last night. This is a continuation of the Pete Zendel story. Joy includes many twists and turns while weaving strong spiritual themes and lessons throughout. This could also be called Grace's story as she struggles to maintain faith and hope while searching for her brother John and keeping her sister Stephanie safe. How do we reconcile faith with evil and struggle? How do we maintain hope when all seems lost? Can we truly forgive our enemies? This book is reading just for the truths it contains. The action will keep you turning the pages. I recommend this book.
I am very impressed with this book! The author has written a great story full of Christian suspense and excellent characters who are very well developed. Lots of great themes in this book - forgiveness, love of family, perseverance and determination, faithfulness of God, growing in spiritual maturity. The story in and of itself is just great! The addition of Scripture, spiritual truths and thought-provoking sermons contained within the book make it Simply Fabulous! If you enjoy reading Christian novels, please read this book...you won't be disappointed.
Tim and Angel have been trying to find John for decades. Stephanie is running from a bad relationship. When Stephanie decides to go to Pastor Pete’s church Tim is furious. The characters in this book are all very special people. The author will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review.
This is the 3rd book in the Pete Zendel series and is as fast-paced and suspenseful as the previous books! I could not put the book down. Glad to see some of the previous characters again in this book and an update on Pastor Pete. A tad more insight into who the Hunter is in "Courageous", perhaps? I suggest reading the previous books in the series in order for understanding and to keep up the momentum. I highly recommend this book! I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.
Joy did it again. She kept me sitting on the edge of my seat at each turn of a page. I could not put this book down. It had suspense at every turn. Just when I thought it had cleared up one mystery, a new mystery would emerge. I feel so blessed to have read this story and tissue was a must. I highly recommend this book if you like a clean thriller.
Wow! This book kept me engrossed from the beginning to the end. It was very hard to put down. Joy once again brings to light many truths concerning God and His plans for us and the daily struggles we as Christians face, through her ability to write a good story. Just one question, how long do I have to wait for the next installment?
Amazing story line with special messages in the sermons Pete shares with his church.
There were many twists and turns and the book left the reader anxious for the next book in the series. We are left with some activities unanswered. Like what happens when Pete and the Hunter meet.
Wonderful book! This book is full of edge of your seat action. It grabs you on the first page and doesn't let go. I love how this author always shows God's love in her books, in this one He took something people meant for harm and turned it into something good. I received an ARC copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I read this book in barely 2 hours; and when I had trouble sleeping I got back up out of bed to finish because I wondered what was going to happen! I think the book was part of what was keeping me awake!! It was also good to learn more about Pastor Pete's health and "listen" to his preaching once again. It is always a pleasure to be gifted these books in this Christian series.
Another new person comes into this book - Ladi. It is interesting to me how Ms. Ohagwu has the main characters getting a life partner as the series progresses. I also like how the christians pray a lot asking God for help & then thanking Him for the answers. So very important in the christian life-dependence on God & Thankfulness.
Oh my goodness, what a great book. Deeply spiritual with people being led to Christ and openly discussing and praying for His will in their lives. The preaching from the pulpit is amazing. What lessons can be learned from this wonderful book. Highly recommend.
The continuing story of finding the Hunter’s identity. Pastor Pete Zendel has awakened from the medical induced coma but still has a long road to recovery. Meanwhile undercover cop Ladi has infiltrated possible Hunter lair with possibility of identifying him (at risk of discovery and death).
The book didn’t seem very long – probably because I couldn’t put it down! A lot is packed in here … Ladi’s undercover work continues, Pete’s recovery … and more. Fast-paced. I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.
This book is a a hard one to put down just like all of her books. I particularly love the way God is woven into the lives of the characters and demonstrates how we can also lean on God at moments when we are out of options. A great read!
Wow, what a ride. I read this in one afternoon because I could not put it down. I highly recommend Courageous if you like clean, edge of the seat stories.
