Hands Down: A Story of Incarceration

Adapted from the journal of a falsely imprisoned man, 'Hands A Story of Incarceration' is a testament against a society quick to point fingers and cry wolf. It implores us to question the motives of those claiming victimhood, for it may reveal their own lack of integrity. With each public accuser advertising their oppression, and clamoring for sympathy, it's clear we must develop a rational dialogue. In these times when one tweet, one blog post or soundbite, regardless of context or humor, could be enough to ruin a life well-lived, we have to find a way to ground ourselves. This non-fiction account, both infuriating and inspiring, relates the struggle of a man trying to regain his dignity, and reframe his situation in a positive light. 'Hands A Story of Incarceration' is a book written for the era of mass imprisonment, and a striking rebuttal to the new moral culture in America.

Learning about how the justice system works is interesting, because it's mainly about who can tell the most convincing story. While the author told a convincing story, I think there may be more, some missing pieces about his own behavior. Or possibly, the alcohol and drug use wiped out his memory, as often happens with addicts. There is a very good possibility his memory was fine, but it's doubtful if he was drinking and popping pills the way he mentioned. A drunk or high person's strength may not be as they think, and possibly grabbing/pushing someone doesn't feel harsh, but it does to the other person... so there could be some credibility to Elena's story. However, her reading in court was over the top and completely unbelievable.

When I initially picked up the book and read what the author stated at the very beginning about the "Me, Too" movement, I almost deleted it from my Kindle. I tried to see his side, but I don't think he fully understood what/why the movement was initiated at the time of writing. What kept my attention was the author's style of writing and my interest in reading about someone who is incarcerated that also has good writing skills.

The book was easy to read, entertaining, and the story flowed well. I liked that the author was often humorous, put a lot of thought into lessons learned from other inmates, and made the best of his situation. However, I only gave it four stars, because there were some grammatical and spelling errors. I hope the author uses an editor on his next book and stays out of bars.

Excellent, but at times heart wrenching

This book was very interesting. It was also educational, with the last chapter showing how Logan learned a new way of thinking about issues. I would love to meet him and have a long chat!
