Helen Van Wyk may well be considered the most popular oil painting instructor in recent times, and is best known for her long-running PBS series "Welcome to My Studio." Her unparalleled instructional books -- brimming with her insightful techniques and full-color images of her work -- continue to teach and inspire artists of all skill levels.
"The Carpenter" in the top right corner of the cover is David Platt who owned the house I've owned the past fifteen years in Rockport, MA. Helen was a friend of his and the neighborhood stories include that David, his wife, and Helen enjoyed afternoon martinis.
The kicker is that when I bought the house I also bought the painting which was covered in dust in the carpentry shop. I had it cleaned, reframed, and it is currently looking at me pretty much life size.
Anyone else have some Helen or David stories? I had never heard of her but I must have seen her painting show on Channel 2 PBS.
Helen is one of the best oil painters that ever lived. She's a wonderful instructor as well. I've learned more from her books and videos than any others I've studied. I highly recommend all of them. Just wish her demos were more available. They're difficult to find.
An indespensable book. Helen Van Wyk is one of my favorite painters (along with several others) and I had even gotten a video tape cassette (yes folks, an old VHS... and I still have it, though I can't play it anymore) of her painting a still life. I love her work, and have learned much from her techniques.
