About the author

Tohby Riddle is an Australian cartoonist and picture-book creator. In 2005 he became editor of The School Magazine, in which his illustrations, non-fiction pieces and poems appear regularly. In 2009 he won the Patricia Wrightson Prize in the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards with Ursula Dubosarsky for their book The Word Spy.

Carl and Minnie like fossicking through the stuff at the tip at the end of their street. They find all sorts of great stuff- a harpsichord, a penny farthing, a flying machine. One day they find an old man. They set him up in a railway carriage (also found at the dump of course). And he does old man stuff with them- he tells them stories, sings old songs, and plays 78s on his gramophone. Until one day the inevitable happens. An unusual story. Engaging, but odd.

I love this book. It is such a beautiful story about what and who we value in society.
