Kar is a survivor. As a half-human, half-elf, he is a walking target. Since the human invasion, the myriad races of Mibekel hate anything associated with their old rivals. That includes Kar. Bitter over his fate, he undertakes a journey...to kill his human father. To cross the Barrier, a mystical boundary that separates Mibekel from the humans, Kar steals a powerful gem that negates magic. That choice pits him against a powerful sorcerer--a sorcerer who wants the gem and will stop at nothing to get it. With bodies piling up, Kar has to take a stand. After everything he has endured, he might be the only one capable of saving Mibekel and its people.
I'm throwing this onto my cozy fantasy shelf even though it's technically...not. It's cozy fantasy in the way that the Dungeons and Dragons movie is cozy fantasy. The stakes are high, the comedy is even higher. I had a lot of fun with this book and its world. It's a story that, though tense at times, always feels more light hearted. I'm enjoying the cast as well. I have the second book on hand and I'm looking forward to reading it soon. I don't know if I want to read the whole series, but it's going to be fun to explore even for a book or two.
This was one intense, crazy book. It follows Kar,(who is part human part elf)and his quest to find and retrieve the gem he is looking for. Which might just be the death of him. He endured quite a few enemies on his quest. One could only imagine being knocked down and getting back up again. He must have 9 lives like a cat. This was a fun book to read. One of the most original stories I’ve read to date. 4/5
A fun quick adventure that fantasy readers can easily enjoy. The book certainly sets the stage and gives you not only a feel for the universe but also exactly what lengths this MC will go to in order to complete his outlandish goal. Hint: nothing short of death will stop this half elf.
A fun and fast fantasy read that will fill your imagination with lots of adventure and action. Looking forward to continuing Kar's adventures in book 2.
An adventure quest where the protagonist encounters many fantasy species, and has to get himself out of various difficulties, some of his own making, some through bad luck. The writing style was a bit passive for my tastes.
