This is the story of what happened when the human battlegroup that is tasked with joining up with Federation forces, reaches the premier training space station Federation One. It infills the story of the Sir William Wallace, and the drama there that unfolded when some of Stevens crew, joined the Captain for dinner. We also meet some of the characters that were prominent in some of the earlier novels and of course, get to know some of the aliens a little better. In this book we also get to know the Ortea and the Dent, and the twists and turns that came to pass during the negotiations, and also Steven and Komoru’s part in them. This is not a book for readers who have not read the rest of the series.
I’m afraid this book really irritated me, it was partly an accumulation of minor frustrations from previous books and the utterly ridiculous situations the author dreamt up during the first half of this book. It didn’t help that the author included chunks from the previous book ‘The Goodwill Ambassador’, there was even some overlapping and mixing of the timelines. At times things were happening in this book before they did in the previous book. The book should really have been numbered 4.5 not 5. If possible I would have given 1.5 stars.
Your writing is maturing as you progress from book to book in the Steven Gordon saga. I find that your characters are more interesting with deeper characterizations making for a more enjoyable and readable novel. You obviously plan more novels in the future. Can't wait to see where the budding romance of Jean and Charlie lead to.
Another great book of this series. Would have given this book 5 stars instead of 4 is due to the misspelled words in this story. But, I'll definitely be reading more from this author and of this series when the next book comes out.
Absolutely adore this series, just wish there were more of them already published. Love the world weaving, love the characters, love the pace - just love love love!
A bit of a redo of book 4, but with additional details and sub plots I can see why the author added the forward, but was not as bad a rehash of the previous book as I expected. It remains more about Charlie than Steven and the story also focuses on the other sides point of view too. It's interesting to get the background Lots of political maneuvering by all sides and the twists regarding the Drent and the other meat eaters were getting confusing at times
My biggest problem with this book is that it is a side story that was included in the series. I don’t mind the extra details or characters, but I’m reading this series to follow certain people. This book should have been 4.5 instead of five so everyone knew it was a side story and could be skipped if you wanted to. 6/10
The story helps fill in some gaps in preparation for the books to come, or so I think. I enjoyed the story. Yes, it did have some repetition, however I like how the characters are growing. The author is very creative about how the humans are able to best the "smarter " people in the room.
I was upset when I first got this book because it was not about Steve, so I set it aside for awhile. It is mostly more of back stories of what other folks were doing during the conflict with the dog people. I am glad I came back to this awesome series.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way it concentrated more on different characters and added more depth to the other races and the new worlds. I really look forward to more!
