Superb, full-color large-scale reproductions of paintings by the artist whose name is synonymous with the American West are accompanied by drawings and sculptures immortalizing the cowboys, native Americans, and others who populated the Old West.
Frederic Remington was the master of Old West art, using his travels and preciseness to capture stampedes or stagecoach runs. You can see one of his paintings and instinctively know it was his work. There were other artists who dabbled in the same genre, but they didn’t understand how dust rose from a horse’s hoof or how a setting sun affected the bare southwest desert. This book serves as both a biography of his life and also as an introduction to his art and sculptures, with enough pictures to understand the artist and why he focused on the Western American scene.
His was an impressionist vocabulary made unique by the harsh Western landscape which served as his motif.
It was interesting to read about Remington’s decision to go “west”, as though it was the edge of the world. Easterners weren’t impressed, but once he saw the big skies and the golden hills, he made his decision to portray the dying age of the cowboy and the end of the prairie lifestyle of the indigenous natives. The book is separated into sections, which allows the reader to see how Remington’s art evolved. If you look at his early work, you’d never think he would become the famous artist of the Old West. His humans are scraggly, the animals not quite where they should be. But then he hit his stride and his mature works show how he used Impressionism to build a scene, especially his nocturnal paintings.
Late in life, he started sculpting, and his bronzes of horses, especially, remain prized to this day. The book is nicely outlined, especially for a Remington newbie such as myself. It allowed me to understand why he painted the Old West while also providing a clear pathway to his mature works and his improved way of working. I think some people love Remington for representing Manifest Destiny and all that, but I simply enjoyed this book for giving me a better understanding of the man and his work.
This biography covers the life of renowned Western artist Frederic Remington. The are several reproductions of his art and illustrations as well as articles he wrote included.
