Western Subjects: Autobiographical Writing In North American West

Rate this book
To investigate what is western about western American autobiographical writing, these essays examine the relationship between place and self-representation and the ways "west" and "self" are performed and politicized in physical, rhetorical and political locations. The memoirists studied include Geronimo, Sarah Winemucca Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Jade Snow Wong. Boardman (English, U. of Nevada, Reno) and Woods (humanities, North Arizona U.) introduce the papers with a discussion of autobiography criticism and the West. They also record a panel discussion of memoirists from the 2001 Western Literature Association Conference. The text lacks an index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
