Gypsy Rock

In 1892 Central Wyoming is booming. It has vast prairies ideal for grazing and precious minerals, both above the ground and below. It also has a greedy few who will do whatever they must to acquire these riches for themselves. What they will not do is allow Billy Young and Deputy Hugo Dorling to stand in their way. Gypsy Rock is a story of one evil act that sets off a chain of events that spirals downward toward dozens of brutal deaths. It is a story of hate and prejudice, acceptance and courage. Ultimately, Gypsy Rock is the story of Billy Young, a twenty-year-old Wyoming rancher, and his effort to find his place in what appears to be a dark, treacherous, and violent world.

Once again Robert Mckee has written a book that keeps you on the edge until the end. In this novel, Deputy United States Marshal, Hugo Dorling has a lead on a senseless murder and Billy Young is serving as back up. This is a partnership that started in Robert McKee’s first novel, Killing Blood. Their witty exchanges and good natured insults in the face of intense situations, keep the reader amused as well as involved.

An old Gypsy woman has been murdered and at first, it seems like she was murdered simply because she was a Gypsy and many in the community of Casper, Wyoming, were prejudiced toward their “kind”. But as the investigation moves on, there are many layers of deceit that led to her murder. Deceit that involved influential leaders in the community acting on their greed.

Robert’s characters are very believable. I especially like how he always has strong women characters included in his stories. In this novel, we never meet Gwenfrei Faw, the lady who was murdered. But as the story unfolds, we learn that she was a respected member of the Gypsy community and the women in Casper learned to respect her, as well. A young woman in the Gypsy community, Deya, was also a strong character whose insights and observations helped with the investigation.

Gypsy Rock gives us a window into a time in our past when people lived a very basic life. Decisions on life and death had to be made based on what was taking place at the time. You had to choose your side and then act on your decision.
Also, Robert, includes facts about the Gypsy culture that are educational, enlightening and very nicely woven into the story. This is a read that all would enjoy. In many ways, the time of the novel and our time, seem to echo each other.
