Despite the heavy editing (both by Georgiana herself in her old age, and later by her Grandson Hugh) I love the way Georgianas journals offer a glimpse of early, colonial life. The descriptions of everyday activities are my favourite, I love the fact that although our modern lifestyle appears so very far removed from Georgianas, the essential thoughts, feelings and activities remain the same.
Not the best book about Melbourne's history, which I guess is why it's so hard to get. Thought the essay at the end was the best bit. But it is better than JP Faulkner's journal, though his was from an earlier time which made it interesting in a different way.
