Yes, yes golliwoggs evil racist yes... don't care. The Galley-Wag as i like to call him, remains the delightful and ingenius hero here and the story is a fun globe-trotting one, until about half-way when it goes completely off the rails.
While the Galley-Wag is treated with all honours and the french and japanese get by ok the story does get somewhat racist towards the turks and then there are unidentified cannibals in it too and the whole thing becomes quite terrifying.
Still beautiful to look at but probably the worst in the series i've read so far storywise.
The Golliwog and his friends the Dutch dolls are always ready for adventure, and in this one, the Golliwog builds them some bicycles and they set off on a lengthy tour. They go first to Paris, and from there with surprising speed find themselves in Japan, Turkey, and Africa. Those bikes can go at a fair speed. As always, the amusing illustrations are what makes this book memorable.
