Honor Charlotte Appleton (1879 - 1951) was born in Brighton on 4th February 1879. She started her art studies at the Kensington Schools and then attended Frank Calderon’s School of Animal Painting and finally the RA at the start of the 20th Century. Whilst at the RA she illustrated ‘The Bad Mrs Ginger’, starting a book illustration career in which she would illustrate over 150 books.
Honor Appleton developed a very delicate watercolour style that captured the innocent world of children, their adventures and life. She was influenced by illustrators such as Kate Greenaway and Annie French and other illustrators of the period. Her watercolours were exhibited at the RA.
The Bad Mrs. Ginger is written by Honor C. Appleton. This book is about a little girl names Anne who stood only 6 inches tall. She is friends with butterflies, cats, birds, and even mice. One day the bad Mrs. Ginger who is a cat, asked Anne to fetch her some food for her baby kittens but Anne did not want to harm her animal friends. Instead, she stands up to Mrs. Ginger after she hit here, and the fairies came to take Anne away to Fairyland. This book can teach children to be good and kind to their friends in order to be treated the same way in return.
Tiny girl lives with cat and learns from animals until she's told by the cat to catch her friends to feed to the kittens. The cat beats her so she leaves for fairyland and gets helped getting there. Odd now to read in a picture book that the heroine is beaten.
