Excerpt from Goethe und die Akademische Kaisergeburtstagsrede
Gern hätte auch ich, indem ich mich anschickte, den hehren Namen Goethe in weihevoller Stunde vor Ihnen erklingen zu lassen, mich des intimen Vorrechts erfreut, das eine solche ört liche Beziehung dem Redner verleiht. Aber aus einem Zwirns faden lässt sich keine festliche Schleife schlingen. Und statt eines lebensmllen Ausschnittes aus der Welt des goethischen Wirkens, den auch der knappe Raum einer Stunde immer zu bieten vermag, würde ich trockene Schnitzel vor Ihnen auszuschütten scheinen, wenn ich nur von Goethes Verhältnis zu meiner engeren hessischen Heimat sprüche.
