This is an objective, informative book about indigenous women of the US. It's not a deep book - covering East Coast to West Coast populations in 198 pages, but it does present information about the domestic life of women in various tribes. Some of this information may have been acquired personally by the authors - his 1988 obituary claims that John Upton traveled a lot (was his wife and co-author with him?), but much of it was most likely gleaned from books in the large bibliography at the end of the book.
However, as a non-indian writing about the indian tribes, there is an us-and-them quality to it. I wonder how native peoples might write about the Europeans?
And, given the title, there is an ironic and rank sexism in Goodreads not acknowledging that there were 2 AUTHORS for this book - John Upton Terrell and DONNA M. TERRELL which is clear on the title page.
