Why Can't Anyone Help Me?: The Nightmare of Adenomyosis

Rate this book
Adenomyosis is a uterine disorder that can cause a whole host of problems including painful and prolonged menstruation, heavy bleeding, and an enlarged uterus. It can dramatically reduce the quality of a woman’s life because of the excruciating pain, fatigue, anemia from excessive blood loss, and emotional pain associated with fertility issues. Women with this disorder suffer tremendously, both emotionally and physically. Since so many women do not receive a correct diagnosis for years, family members and friends may not fully understand what these women are going through on a daily basis. This book is divided into five sections. Section I reviews the basics of the reproductive tract and the function of hormones in a woman’s body. Section II gets into the specifics of adenomyosis. Since endometriosis commonly occurs in patients with adenomyosis, this disorder is addressed as well. Section III deals with estrogen dominance and the role of xenoestrogens since this disorder has been linked to excess estrogen. Section IV looks at diet and herbs as a way to help control symptoms, and the subject of phytoestrogens is discussed at length. Section V addresses the emotional aspects of this disorder and how stress can exacerbate symptoms. Problems with diagnosis and treatment of adenomyosis shines a light on the fact that we need much more research on this uterine disorder.

I have a B.S. degree in Microbiology with a Chemistry minor from Eastern Kentucky University. In addition, I have a Master's degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health. I worked over twenty years as a laboratory technologist mostly in the field of cytogenetics as a certified cytogenetic technologist. In 2009, I broke my back which suddenly ended my laboratory career due to my inability to work full-time. At that point, I wrote my first book, Maria's Mixes: A How-to Guide on Making Your Own Herbal Teas, at the insistence of some close friends who enjoyed my homemade herbal teas. I enjoyed this so much, that I wrote again....and again,...and again! I have published eight books (three under the name Maria Martin) and am currently working on my ninth. In my spare time, I enjoy wine tasting, theater, concerts, spending time with my friends, and spoiling my little Angel cat :)

It was a relief to find a source on Adenomyosis specifically, and not something that only mentions it as a footnote to endometriosis.

But I was disappointed by how much pseudoscience is suggested. The author has a masters in holistic nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health, a non-accredited distance learning college that closed down in 2010. So readers should be aware that some of the treatments she advocates for are not evidence based and have no scientific backing.

Examples of pseudoscience include: suggesting acupuncture to relieve pain (she writes that studies have shown that meridians exist, but doesn't include those studies like she does for the rest of the book). She also fear mongers about products that are safe for use and pushes to "buy organic" and suggests herbal remedies.

There are some evidence based treatments discussed as well, but I think that just makes the book more dangerous because it discusses non-evidence based treatments as if they're equally effective. The author also has a B.S. in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry so this especially disappointing to me.

I will say that the listing of the symptoms and the stories of how it affected her life, personal relationships and work were helpful and made me feel like someone understood.
