Inspired By True Events Fans of 12 Years a Slave or Roots will love the gripping novel that is Rooks of the Raven. A face without a name is intangible, as is a name without a face...My freedom was taken away from me when my family was discovered by a man--a slave trader--with a personal vendetta. After watching my family tortured before my eyes, me and my baby sister were sold into slavery in Virginia where we learned first-hand everything our parents worked so hard to conceal us from. I didn't want my baby sister to breathe the sins of this world, so I did what I thought was best. I took her life.
All I can say is WOW! This truly was an amazing / emotional story. It was hard to read in the sense of reading what slaves went through, however I couldn't put the book down. The realism of this story will make you sad, angry, and there will be happy moments. I commend you Franklin for writing such a wonderful story.
The story line is good, well thought out. However, proceed with caution, the book is like a movie someone pauses randomly and either rewinds and restarts, or fast forwards and begins from there. It is so very difficult to follow along. It is violent, and though the violence is real to the time, it is randomly tossed in, as if just for a lark. The time period is vague until the sections are dated. If all the make sense parts were ordered neatly this would be a very good book just needing a bit of development. It is very confusing. I liked the make sense parts though and hope to read a rewritten edition of this book someday. I was provided a free copy for my honest review.
I believe this author has a hit with this novel. It was very difficult reading because the imagery and the emotions were so powerful. While I think it would make a great movie, there would be scenes that would be quite controversial. I say not perfect, but that is with the editing, that didn't pick up copies of paragraphs following those same paragraphs and allowed grammatical errors. The story content is right on.
It is easy to find a novel to read, but not every day when you find a novel that touches the soul. This book truly deserves recognition for its ability to demonstrate that true strength is indeed birthed from adversity. A must read for anyone who is fascinated by stories that are based on historical accounts!!! *****
Confusing look at slavery from a free young girl who's forced into slavery. Scenes change without explanations or set-up. Historically, events are well written. 2 1/2 stars. I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
