Afoot in the South: Walks in the Natural Areas of North Carolina by Phillip Manning (John F. Blair 1993) (508.756). This is an interesting little book on the natural history of North Carolina; one should realistically refer to the subject matter as "natural history lite." The author samples eighteen areas of North Carolina by describing the state parks found thereupon. Many of these essays do not seem to be tied to any specific geographic area; it's as though the essay was prepared first and then assigned a precise location on the North Carolina map. This book is aimed more at the armchair naturalist than at the hardcore dirt in your hair hiker. My rating: 7/10, finished 5/20/16.
