Lascaux. Le Geste, l'espace et le temps

" Pendant une dizaine d'années j'ai eu l'intense privilège d'effectuer des recherches sur l'art pariétal de la grotte de Lascaux. Le travail achevé je m'attardais quelques instants, soit au pied des Grands Taureaux de la Rotonde, soit sur les marches qui précèdent l'accès à l'Abside. C'est pendant ces brefs instants que le contact avec ce monde si particulier était le plus émouvant, que l'imaginaire venait à ma rencontre, imperceptiblement d'abord, pour ensuite me submerger, au point que certains jours il me fallait écourter cette contemplation tant l'émotion suscitée par ces témoignages me déroutait. Lascaux tire sa puissance suggestive de la présence permanente de l'image : quel que soit le site d'observation, un animal vous regarde, vous interroge. Aurochs, chevaux, cerfs, bisons et bouquetins sont omniprésents, et, à travers eux, l'empreinte dominante de l'homme. De l'entrée jusqu'au tréfonds de la grotte se déroule le grand livre des mythologies premières, leurs fondements mêmes, avec comme thème central la création de la vie, et, au-delà, la genèse du monde. "

If you are interested in Paleolithic art or teach Art History Survey I, then you MUST read this book. Aujoulat details the Lascaux Cave in every manner possible - formally, geologically, scientifically, and historically. I had no idea the complexity of the paintings in terms of technique and formality. All we ever see is the photograph of the Hall of the Bulls and the Man, Bison, Rhino image. However, there are other paintings within the caves that I think are more extraordinary. In addition, he details the variety of tools found within the cave including lamps and other tools that have incised decoration. What surprised me the most was the effort to create the illusions of three dimensions and movement within other paintings in the cave. The Lascaux section in all art history books needs to be re-written.

After reading the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel, I needed a reference to see what cave art looked like...beautiful!
