The book seeks to provide a synthesis as focused as possible on Servetus as a physician; however, it is impossible to completely separate this aspect from his true passion, theology, which gave meaning to his life and ultimately led to his death at the stake.
In order to situate the figure historically and to properly assess his fundamental contribution to the study of blood circulation, the work first includes a brief overview of the knowledge of blood circulation from the time of Galen, prior to describing Servetus’s life and works. These ideas remained essentially unchanged until the beginning of the sixteenth century. The book also outlines the political and social context of Servetus’s time, offering a brief discussion of the Inquisition and the Renaissance.
The book was produced at the initiative of the Spanish Society of Cardiology.
