What do you think?

Obsidian Mirror #2
Fire in the Ocean
After saving the world once, Sierra’s earned a vacation. She’s thinking Hawaii. Sun, surf, sand, and a little bit of work (hey, it’s still Sierra we’re talking about) are all she wants. So when an emergency calls her boyfriend away, she’s not devastated. Instead, she can live with taking Chaco, Coyotl the Trickster, who can be a great companion when he’s not scheming. But when Chaco starts to look a little more than nauseous on the plane, their trip takes an ominous turn.
Chaco’s not just sick, he’s mortal.
With a moody Chaco and the loveable but chaotic Fred, a mannegishi that can disappear at will, stowing away for the journey, Sierra’s trying to make the best of a messy situation. The sun, surf, and sand are still there, and Hawaii is more breathtaking than she ever imagined.
Literally.
On a whale watching excursion, Sierra, Chaco, and Fred are swept overboard by an undersea force more powerful than they ever imagined. There are dark forces at work. With Chaco no longer connected to his land, Sierra will have to think fast for them to possibly survive.

January 16, 2018I loved learning about Hawaiian gods and demi gods in this book. What fun adventures!

This book was extensively researched and nicely written, and it objectively deserves a five-star rating. So my four stars tell you more about me than the author. A couple of things annoyed me about this book: It is fantasy fiction and it has a suspended ending. I hate fantasy fiction, because I don't believe in magic or gods. I gave Keenan's first book five stars because the fantasies weren't excessive. There were a couple of fun characters that were more like house pets than avatars. But in this book, there were just too many avatars, sorcerers, gods and demigods. It was hard to keep track of them all, and I really didn't care what magical powers they had or lacked, and how they conflicted and collaborated with each other or with mere mortals. Suspended endings always annoy me and I always suspect they are a publisher's trick to make me buy the next book in a series (this was the second book in a trilogy). One thing I do like about Keenan's work, however, is that she weaves in important messages about threats to the global environment.

I really enjoyed the first book but didn't like this one. The characters had very little development. The story seemed to be put in as filler for a lesson on the Hawaiian gods. The book also came off more preachy about environmental issues than the first one.

I was given this title through, on behalf of the publisher, in exchange for my honest review.
I really liked this book. It was very different from my usual YA pick. Also, it had some really cool details on the Hawai'ian lifestyle and cultures. Right from the start the book has a dictionary if you will, to help out with the words used in the writing. The characters were very layered and unique in each their own ways.
We have Sierra, she is Clancys' fiance. Chaco and Fred are like her, but different. Clancy, is Sierras' fiance, and he is like super sweet and understanding. Chaco is a friend of Sierras, he is also an avatar. And Fred is a friend as well, he is completely unique!! They call him a Mannegishi, he can disappear becoming invincible.
Sierra discovers her powers during an earlier battle against Aztec God- Necocyaotl. She gets help from a friend, Rose, with strengthening her control over her powers.
She leaves for Hawaii with Chaco, and apparently Fred as a stow away. Unfortunately she realizes Chaco not doing so well, he tells it is not sickness that he has lost his powers. This means he is human and can die, and won't have his usual abilities.
Once reaching the hotel, she decides the next day they will leave. Chaco tells her to stay, so they go on a whale tour, since she has three more days until having to go to midway and work on the project. During the tour they spot something unusual, the captain announces it is a fair-weather spout. Usually they don't last, but this one seemed to follow the boat. During that time, nobody was paying mind to her or Chaco as they were swept off the boat by a large mystical, like octopus. Could her powers alone save them? Would they make it to find land? Or even make it home?
A new and wonderful adventure for me, sure to be for others as well. The writing is amazing and; the magic, and the world-building is incredible!!! I loved the book and loved the writing style. I especially loved the Culture references to Hawai'ian people. Just a simply fun and amazing adventurous book.
