In this book Anton Wallich-Clifford, the founder of the Simon Community, takes us into skid row, that gloomy, unperceived half-world of back streets, doss houses, flop houses, sleazy bars, caffs, station waiting-rooms, public lavatories and bomb sites, where thousands of men and women -'live'.
Caring on Skid. Row is a sympathetic but realisdc account of the many responsibilities, problems and difficult situadons facing those working with the homeless. More than this, it is a practical guide to principles and techniques learned and developed by the author, his co-workers and other experienced organisations, whose aim is to create a caring community for those whose only world is skid row.
Anton Wallich-Clifford first became involved with the care of homeless people as a child when his mother would give him money or food for them.
Later, as a probation officer at Bow Street Magistrates' Court in London, he became aware of the problems of that often forgotten fringe of society, the men and women -'of no fixed abode'.
Frustrated by the lack of facilities available to the homeless, he founded the Simon Community in 1963. Since then, Anton has actively encouraged not only the growth of the Simon Community, which now has many projects in England, Ireland, Scotland and Kenya, but also the total expansion of work and caring among the homeless.
