Rasheen Langston married into great wealth and prominence, but was never able to live up to her husband’s expectations. Now widowed and childless, she seeks more from life than representing the Langston name in Baltimore Society. Instead, she secures a teaching position on an estate in rural Maryland, only to find that once more she is in the position of trying to win a man’s respect.Connor Reilly loathes the pomp and circumstance of the upper class. The orphaned son of an Irish horse trainer, he was sent as a young boy to live with his wealthy uncle in America. Connor resents being saddled with Rasheen as the teacher for his school, but agrees to give her a year’s trial as a favor to a friend. He assures himself that she will flee back to her Society friends after the first week of school, which is for the best since he is far too attracted to her. From their very first encounter, the two square off in a duel of wills. Each of them is driven to live life on their own terms and not let others define who they are. When they work together to rescue an abused child, they find that they are not so different. But this child has a secret that makes powerful enemies for them – life threatening enemies - that will draw them into the violence of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad strike.

I enjoyed this book very much. I like reading books whose setting I can relate to. I could picture many locations from this book. Rasheen was definitely a woman ahead of her time. I like strong women characters and that she was. Also. she and Connor seemed made for each other.
