About the author

August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, a German dramatist and writer, also worked as a consul in Russia and Germany.

In 1817, people burned a book of Kotzebue during the Wartburg festival. Karl Ludwig Sand, a militant member of the Burschenschaften, murdered him. This murder gave Klemens von Metternich the pretext to issue the Carlsbad decrees of 1819, which dissolved the Burschenschaften, cracked down on the liberal press, and seriously restricted academic freedom in the states of the German confederation.

Had to read for my Romantic plays and players module at university. Quite interesting to look at this play within the context of the French Revolution and the Warren Hastings Trial.
