This book is filled with Encouragement, Inspiration and Life-Lessons

For many years around the world, Don Moen has led many Christians into the presence of God through worship. GOD WILL MAKE A WAY is his first book and lifts the curtain on the stories behind the songs.

Here’s an example of the type of encouragement and insight embedded into the pages of this book: “The very real story of what quite unintentionally became the signature song of my music career, “God Will Make A Way,” was born out of a tragedy that started me on the path to understanding that when storms threaten our lives, we are about to see the power of God move in miraculous ways. Here’s the catch though. We must make the intentional decision to look for Him there. He will make a way, but will we see it? Our sinful, selfish DNA is wired to miss Him and only sink deeper into our can’t, won’t don’t lives. Deciding to look for God in our storms instead of staring helplessly at the wind and waves can bring simple truths like a church marquee message, an encouraging word from a friend, or the words of a book to offer authentic hope that can cut through the darkest nights, the most tragic circumstances.” (Page xv)

The final chapter highlights principles of worship and some are contrarian and unexpected yet rooted in Moen’s years of experience. Every Christian will gain benefits from a careful reading and application of this book to their daily lives. I highly recommend it.

Difficult to write a proper review, as I struggled when reading this. I couldn’t really engage with what was on the page, and it didn’t feel like it shared anything new from other books of this ilk. Sorry it just wasn’t for me.

Don Moen’s God Will Make a Way was written to the “weary and leary… in our downward spiraling and broken world” (p. xiii). Moen has committed his life to one single and solitary purpose: “The worship of the Great I AM to usher in his power, praise, healing, and deliverance,” (p. 43). His music has reached millions around the world (even in closed countries to the gospel) because it is profoundly simple, yet touches the heart so deeply. He describes God’s miracles throughout his music ministry but also the struggles of faith and spiritual warfare that always accompany the journeys of God’s leaders. It is a deeply encouraging book.

Excerpts:

“What if instead of panic or anger or pride, you humbly invited Jesus to speak to your storm and say, “Peace, be still?” After all, the only question is not if He can calm your storm but if you will invite Him into your boat” (p. 11).

“Terry taught that the Word of God, the name of Jesus and the blood of Jesus are three offensive weapons God has given us to defeat the enemy. These weapons are engaged through the preaching of God’s Word, prayer, testimony and praise and worship. . .Every weekend we were seeing dramatic moves of God as people grasped the vision that our worship creates an atmosphere for God to move in miraculous ways” (p. 69).

“I once heard a pastor say that the disciples prayed for days so that when Peter preached for ten minutes, God moved mightily in thousands of lives. Now, we want to pray for ten minutes and expect God to move for days and still reach thousands. We have it backwards in our culture” (p. 74).

“The Bible says , ‘no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him’ (2 Cor. 2:9-10 NLT). We can learn to keep our spirits tuned to the Holy Spirit’s frequency so we can hear what He wants to reveal to us. We can see in the Spirit. We can hear in the Spirit. We can pray in the Spirit. We can move in the Spirit. We can sincerely ask God to reveal His miracles” (pp. 89-90).

“Ps. 22: 3 tells us that God is enthroned on the praises of His people. When we lift our voices in praise – with or without a song – we are building a throne for the King of kings and Lord of lords. The World English Bible says that God “inhabits” the praises of His people, and when God is with us, He will save those who are lost, heal the sick, deliver the oppressed or depressed, and provide for every need” (p.155).

“I must sing a new song even when I still feel like life is in an old place. . .I must choose to bless God rather than curse my circumstances. . .I will choose to continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God and give thanks in all things. . . Thanksgiving is the first step on the journey into God’s presence when we thank Him for what He’s done and then thank Him by faith for what’s He’s about to do. . .When I praise, faith will rise up in my heart, giving me the courage to believe that God can calm any storm I face. . .The sound of my worship and praise confuses and confounds the enemy attacking me. . . My praise will stop the fear that paralyzes me and mobilize my faith within me” (pp.166-172).

“While in our self-centeredness we want to promote ourselves, He calls us to passionately pursue Him, allowing His Spirit to decide where we are placed in life’s line-up… At events when I consider other singers I’m sharing the stage with, many of them my heroes, I think, I know why that artist is here, and that band, but why in the world am I here? In one ear, I hear a voice that says, ‘Don, you’d better dial up this performance because people are going to realize that you are not good enough.’ But then I hear a different voice whisper in my other ear, ‘Just be Don Moen, and use the talents I gave you. I’ll work through you. Just give me your best tonight’” (pp. 130-131).

I felt the author's heart on every page as he sincerely shares his truthful perspective of who he is and who God is! You will be blessed and encouraged to walk with Don as he shares his personal family stories, as well as his professional work adventures. Plus, his musical ministry outreaches all around the world will give you a new perspective on life and your calling. If you are a worship leader in the church, this is a must-read. If you are a musician on a worship team, you've got to sift through the pages to see why you do what you do. If you have faced a job loss, lost a loved one or you're facing an uphill battle, then get the book to experience the journey of a wonderful man sharing his passion and hope in the love of God making a way for you and me. Don's story is filled with God's power and passion that burns deep in his soul that cannot be contained. He shares God's love in such a powerful way, that I believe you will find hope and encouragement in whatever your circumstance is. My favorite line in the book, “God is always working in ways we cannot see.”

The overall message is so inspiring and I was challenged in my faith.
So blessed to read this book! I just couldn't put it down!

If you can stomach the sprinkling of Charismatic let-the-Spirit-guide-you, seek-after-a-sign, liver-shiver theology sprinkled throughout this book, it is a pretty decent read. Don Moen has written some beautiful and worshipful music. He comes across as a humble and gentle man. To his credit, he clearly avoids the prosperity theology pothole in this book. But, when he cites Scripture (and he doesn't very often), it is almost always out of context and using a poor hermeneutic.

I started reading this last summer, but I find it difficult reading Christian non fiction books. I enjoy listening to his Praise/Worship Music, so I thought I'd give this a go.
I can't say I agree with everything in there. I enjoyed reading his stories that he has recalled, and it does evoke faith. I think it is something I may have to re-read more carefully and maybe take some notes. I own this in paperback.

Loved every page. Resonated with me. Gave me new direction. In all things praise and worship first. Regardless of circumstances. More difficult more painful all the more worship comes first. Amen.

God Will Make a Way - Yes, He Will!

The title of this book is very encouraging. In this book Don shares his stories about his calling to worship God through his talent, music, as a devotion throughout his life. In the midst of difficulties and shortcomings, Don managed to get through everything simply because he believes that God is able to rescue him.

I’m impressed by how honest Don he is by reading that in some phases of his life, he encountered panic attacks and anxiety yet he never cease to praise God even in the lowest point of his life. He is not ashamed to say that as a Christian and having experienced and witnessed so many miraculous things in his life, there is still part of him who found it difficult to live in peace. Don is just like me, and maybe everyone else. He shows that being a Christian does not mean that we will have peace in our hearts all the time and will be able to live a happy life. Yet, as what he says, and also as what I believe, God allows the anxiety and panic attacks to happen to attract us. To bring us closer to him.

Don also says in this book that we need to praise God in every situation. It might be difficult to praise God when we have just lost our loved one, or when we experience bad things, yet praising God allows us to see clearly and opens our heart to reach the mighty God and therefore gives us new hope that God is able and will make a way.

Great book full of homespun wisdom. Don is a very humble man and has been through his own personal trials and was not afraid to share that even he wavered at times. Music is good for the soul, whether you are Christian or not. A book to savour and not rush through. Very inspiring and encouraging for all.

Review of God Will Make a Way by Don Moen with Robert Noland

Don Moen has had an incredible life of following God. That's not to say it has been an easy life – far from it. But as Moen has been faithful, God has used his life to yield much fruit.

Moen was raised in a very strict religious home. He was made to take piano lessons, but was told that any music with a beat was sinful. Moen studied music in college and at the same time played professionally for area symphonies almost every night. But his fear that he was sinning – based on the theology he was taught as a child - caused Moen quit school to return to Minnesota to become a lumberjack.

Read this book to find out how God led Moen out of the woods to attend Oral Roberts University, meet his wife-to-be, and begin a long-term association with Terry Law and Living Sound to minister all over the world.

Moen is perhaps best known as a pioneer of the modern Praise and Worship movement. As part Hosanna! Integrity Music, Moen visited churches around the world to collect the latest praise and worship music, which was shared on a global level. While with Integrity, Moen signed now well-known song writers and worship leaders like Paul Baloche, Ron Kenoly, and Darlene Zschech.

The tragic death of Moen’s nephew caused the spiritual wilderness or desert, which in fact became the fertile ground for Moen to write what he describes as the defining song of his music career, “God Will Make a Way”.

Moen uses the story of how “God Will Make a Way” was written to encourage others who are feeling despondent, like they’ve prayed but nothing will change. If you need a shot of encouragement, this will be a good read for you. If you get excited reading about the miraculous ways God leads and works through His people, you’ll love this book!
