Scott H. Andrews is a writer of science fiction. He teaches college chemistry. He is Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of the fantasy magazine Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
Andrews's short stories have appeared in Weird Tales, Space and Time, Heroic Fantasy Quarterly, On Spec, Crossed Genres, and M-Brane SF.
Neither story in this issue lit my fire; Cassandra Khaw's "She Who Hungers, She Who Waits" is the better of the two, thanks to the author's gift for macabre atmospherics and stark imagery. The other story is "Cry of Desire in a Shrouded Land" by Talisen Fray, an interminable and monotonous novelette that nurses a couple of good ideas but achieves little by it. Also, one of the story's character arcs hand waves past an horrible offense and I am surprised editor Scott H. Andrews let it through without comment. It left a bad taste in my mouth, even more so that the story was a slog to get through.
She Who Hungers, She Who Waits by Cassandra Khaw 4 stars
I am giving this story 4 stars because the writing and the imagery are incredible. However, I was unable to connect with the main character and really don't have a clue what happened in this story or what it was about.
Cry of Desire in a Shrouded Land by Talisen Fray 4 stars
This story was creepy not in a horror way but one that was just unsettling. I am not sure if it is me or the story but it took a long time for me to sorta figure out what this story was all about and even now I am still a bit lost. The writing of this story was extremely well done it sucked me in despite me feeling lost.
Honestly not sure if my bewilderment when reading these two stories was about them or that I am just in a weird place today mentally.
