In Michael J. Chase’s emotionally charged memoir, he explains how our most significant moments of pain can lead us toward a life that is bitter . . . or one that is undeniably better. By choosing to see any crisis, big or small, as the precursor to courage, resilience and especially, truth, we discover the meaning behind To evolve spiritually, deepen our compassion and use our experiences to make life better for ourselves and others.Written with raw emotion and vulnerability, Chase chronicles his journey into darkness, revealing how he escaped the grip of severe depression; turned despair into strength, and in the end, proves that just because you’ve had a dark past, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a bright future.
Michael J. Chase is a bestselling author, renowned speaker, and one of today’s most influential voices for creating a kinder world. Michael’s work is not aligned with any particular belief system—his teachings are based on the universal language of kindness, which embraces all and excludes none. When he is not traveling, Michael resides on the coast of Maine where he has authored three books that highlight the benefits of living a compassionate life.
This book describes the experience of developing and battling depression so very well. Michael is able to put into words the many feelings that one has when they first realize they are suffering from depression. He describes the anguish of not being able to pull himself out of that dark place. Then, he teaches us how to seek help and and eventually how to accept that help, even the parts he was resistant to. He walks us through his entire experience, including his inspiring learnings once his depression lifted. It all rings so true to my own personal experience and probably so many others as well. Thank you, Michael for sharing your story and helping to lessen the stigma around depression. As a student on the path to becoming a mental health counselor, this book was extremely helpful!
This book is right on the mark, and the author 's intimate relationship with the affliction is apparent and helpful. I, too, struggled with clinical depression. This is a pit so deep that only medication can start the ascent out. Often losses and hopelessness start the descent down, and only faith in God coupled with the correct antidepressants will lift us out of the mire. Even though Mr. Chase gave an accurate description of depression, I have this book three stars because of offensive, to me, language. The F-word detracted from the message and lesson the author was trying to convey. He is a good writer so he must know many better words to convey what he wanted instead of this degrading and sexual expression. I hope he will omit this word in his future writings.
