‘Daisy, Bold & Beautiful’ by talented and prodigious author Ellie Collins is a wonderful YA novel about trying to stand up for oneself and one’s choices. I was really engrossed in the book which hooked me right from the very first page itself. The novel is upbeat, well penned, inspirational and a wonderful ‘feel-good’ novel about a young adult called DJ. DJ has recently moved from her old town to a much bigger locality and is starting out in a new middle school. From her first interactions on the bus to the realistic way she makes friends, ‘Daisy, Bold & Beautiful’ reads like a professionally done Young Adult novel which just takes one’s breath away. This is because the marvellous author of this new-age modern novel was only a pre-teen when she penned the book! I applaud her guardians for encouraging her to take this step towards publishing her first novel. I really enjoyed it and I’m sure every young adult or pre-teen will enjoy the story of DJ. I also applaud the publishers namely Fresh Ink for taking the plunge to not only publish this excellent piece of literature but also to encourage young multi-talented writers like Ellie Collins to write their own coming of age stories which resonate more with readers of all ages. Indeed, the story of DJ’s struggles and anxiousness rings true and comes out as a realistic depiction of what a young student goes through when introduced into a new school. Collins’ expert blending of DJ’s story with that of a famous Greek mythological myth comes out beautifully in the book making it a winner. I loved the well-crafted dialogues, the excellent characterization, and the expert descriptions in this book which enhance the overall enjoyment when one reads this novel. The world of DJ seemed so real to me that I did not have any difficulty in resonating with her viewpoints about life and even started loving her as a unique individual. All the characters are likable and realistically depicted in this book which could really teach some adult authors a thing or two about the perfect way to handle their characters in their own novels. Some novels are a chore to read because of the lack of proper characterization, but one will never feel so while reading ‘Daisy, Bold & Beautiful’. Instead, one will want to read more and more about DJ’s friends, her mature father, her X-box loving friends, her teachers, et al. I especially loved the mature way Collins has handled the topic of gaming in this book. I think this young lady needs an award just for that itself. There are so many YA and pre-teen books in the market today that glorify all kinds of deadly vices, including gaming. By tackling this new age addiction in a mature and adult way, pre-teen Ellie Collins has gone the distance in her craft towards near perfection which to me is not a mere ‘talent’ but a service to society. If any parent out there is having a gaming addict in their home, young or middle aged, who needs to come back to the real world then Ellie Collins’ book is the one you should be reading right now. It is one of the best parts of the book and any reader will benefit from reading Collins’ views on the same. Teachers who want to build positivity in their students should pick up this book to read and use as a teaching tool or aid in the classroom. Those who are also Percy Jackson fans and who like a bit of fantasy in their YA fiction will also not be disappointed because this book has a good mix of your favourite Greek mythology and real American school life. The book ‘Daisy, Bold & Beautiful’ captivates the reader and is a perfect antidote to boredom. Grab your copy of this revolutionary YA book today! My favourite characters in the book were DJ herself and Hudson, her male friend. My favourite part of the book was when DJ invites her friends over to her home. That was a scene which I thoroughly enjoyed reading and it edified me. When I read this book, there were times when I felt that if I too had behaved in a logical and practical manner at my own school, I would have also had friends and probably a pleasant childhood. Therefore, this novel is something that will make a reader think and ponder over the unique situation young people today are finding themselves in, where the real world does not matter, and screen time is the main focus of life. Do your young adult or pre-teen a favour and get this book for them pronto. Needless to say, I am humbled by Collins’ excellence in this field, and I hope she continues to write more fiction in the future. She is a young author to watch out for. Let’s make her famous and purchase your copy of her first novel by Fresh Ink titled ‘Daisy, Bold & Beautiful’. You will be glad you did. I hope to read more books by Ellie Collins soon. She has that old world magic like Judy Blume, Andrew Clement and L.M. Montgomery. Ellie Collins gets 5 stars from me obviously. Kudos to her on a job well done! In the language of cricket, in her first ball she has managed to hit a six! I wish her future success as an author.

Daisy, Bold & Beautiful is the story of D.J, A young girl who learns to overcome her fears and gain the confidence to stand up for herself.
D.J has recently transferred schools and is very nervous about her first day at the new school. She meets May, a bubbly girl in her bus, and instantly feels a sense of security with her. She then meets Payton and Lexi who will later become her friends for life!
As the story goes on, Persephone The Goddess of spring visits D.J and they both instantly bond as they share their common love for gardening. They talk about their life and how D.J picked up her love for gardening from her mom. D.J is sad to hear about the story of Persephone and how Hades tricked her into staying in the underworld where no plants grow.
Although D.J had made friends on her first day of school, she is nervous and feels like she doesn't belong with them. Mainly because of the video games that the girls love but D.J has no interest in. She is scared to express what she really feels and thus is made to play games with the girls.
So, one day Persephone and D.J make a promise that each one will stand up for themselves. And D.J overcomes her anxiety and fears and finally is able to communicate with her friends and also the cute guy Hudson she had a crush on! And Persephone on the other hand convinces Hades to let her plant the house plants that required less sunlight!
This is a pretty neat and straightforward story especially when it's from an eleven-year-old. The story was short as apparently, it is a part of the series. This was a good read and I liked it mainly because it had the greek mythology stuff which I love.

This one short read consists of many layers.
This story tells of overcoming fears and anxiety, remaining true to one’s self, and the importance of ignoring assumptions. The unconditional love and understanding of a parent provides a solid base for his child to stand on.
As the new girl in town, D.J. would much rather climb back into bed than attend her first day of middle school. Making new friends is never easy. Asking those brand-new friends to try something completely different from the norm is frightening.
To the ancient Greeks, mythology was used to provide answers to unanswerable questions. Mythology was also used to explain social situations. After the loss of her mother, D.J. found Persephone to be the perfect Goddess to help guide her through her social fears. D.J. was able to use the trials experienced by Persephone to navigate through her own insecurities. As humans, we yearn to grow and expand our horizons. The difficult part, however, is accomplishing this without closing the door on an important part of your being. Through their talks, D.J. found the courage to power through her fears to remain true to herself.
Another pitfall of being the new kid is becoming the recipient of everyone’s well-meaning but misguided opinions. You never know what you’ll miss out on if you believe a teacher is unapproachable or a fellow student is singularly focused. View others with an open mind. Decide for yourself if you want to interact with them or not.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning the various lessons expressed through the imaginings of the author. I look forward to reading her future work.

This is such a heartwarming story about a girl starting middle school in a new town, new school and without her mom. The book is well-written and to know it was written by a ten-year-old is mind-blowing. I loved every aspect of this book from the rendezvous in the garden with the mythical Goddess, Persephone to the challenges of trying to fit in at an awkward age in life. The messages are powerful in this book. 'Be yourself no matter what' is a strong message. And, if you stay true to yourself, everything will fall into place. The book also touches on how a child deals with her grief at the loss of a parent. I highly recommend this book for teens and tweens. I think everyone can learn something from Daisy Bold & Beautiful. My hat is off to the young author!

A moving, well-written story in a contemporary setting featuring a variation of the Persephone myth by a thoughtful young author. Especially recommended for young readers seeking inspiration to get through challenging situations.

A fabulous middle grade read! Has a touch of fantasy, mixed with a helping of real life. I loved the Greek mythology references, and the modernization of them.

A wonderful story written by an exceptional storyteller...
More often than not we relate ourselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help us to get inspiration from the characters. These novels often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for us to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these novels at regular intervals can actually help the reader to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.
Daisy, Bold & Beautiful by Ellie Collins is a well-crafted contemporary coming of age novel. The story had every element a good story should have. A solid and captivating plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s plenty of imagery in the writing style that makes you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.
The book description itself gives a sneak preview: ‘D.J. and her dad moved far from the small town and only home she ever knew. Now she’s starting middle school in the city with kids she’s never met. She tries to make friends, but they all appear to be slaves to screen time. D.J. just likes to garden, nurturing plants, watching them grow and thrive. She must be dreaming; her new friend can’t possibly be real—and what could she know about getting along with gamers? D.J. really needs some ideas, or she might never find her own place in a complicated world.’
Now, if that’s not enough to get your curiosity juices flowing, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s always a pleasure reading a debut novelist. But what makes this even more exceptional, is that it was written by a young author who was turning eleven and just beginning sixth grade!
Captivating and commendable, this work had me immersed from the beginning. It’s a unique and whimsical fiction interwoven with true-life teenage drama. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of witty and fanciful moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly enchanting and fascinating journey!
It’s one of those books that come along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.
If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Ellie Collins in the future. Not because it’s my particular type of genre, but because young talent should always be encouraged. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book. It also has a distinctly cinematic feel to it and I could easily see it being adapted to the Silver Screen. Perhaps food for thought for Miss Collins? A well-deserved five stars from me.

It's a book written by a ten-year-old! It is far beyond my expectation; I have to admit.
The plot is well developed with a profound meaning. It recounts the story of a young girl's anxiety in her first week in a new town, attending a new school and trying to fit into a group of newly acquainted friends amidst her sorrow of losing her mother in recent months.
The author's mature writing is illustrated in the idyllic garden scenes, the depiction of the girl's emotional dread, and the resolve of overcoming self-doubt and being herself. It's ingenious to seamlessly incorporate the characters of Greek mythology into the narrative to convey the essence of the story.
This book is not only good for mid-school age but also suitable for older ones, even an adult. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good read and find a dose of fantasy and inspiration.

A BIG Thank You to NetGalley and Fresh Ink Group for providing me a copy of “Daisy, Bold & Beautiful” by by Ellie Collins in exchange for my review. I really wasn’t expecting to like this book as much as I did! “Daisy” was a sweet and charming book to read!
It’s always tough being the new kid in school, and the author has written DJ’s story in a very positive manner. She shows DJ’s vulnerable side by highlighting how she tries to adjust making friends than being socially awkward. I actually enjoyed the fantasy element where DJ meets Persephone for help. I’m sure the pure history buffs of Greek mythology might roll their eyes on how Hades is mentioned, but it was hilarious thinking of the Greed Gods as teenagers. My favorite character in the story is May. This girl is so upbeat and positive in life that she would make anyone comfortable to be her friend. I also liked Lexi’s trivia knowledge randomly mentioned. I was expecting someone like Payton to be more negative and hostile towards DJ. It would have been interesting to see a negative character in the book and see how DJ deals with her.
Ellie Collins has wonderful job in writing this novel! Wait a minute, the author is just a teenager? Holy cow, that is amazing! When I was reading this book, I thought it was written by a 20 or 30 year old professional! I can definitely see Ellie Collins going a long way, and cannot wait to read her future releases! Her style of writing is so smooth and simple, and the plot is easy to understand and follow. I would love to see her try another genre such as a more mature young adult theme.
The primary reason I didn’t give this a 5 star rating was because of the cover. Firstly, who is that supposed to be in the cover? I suspect it is Persephone as she looks mature based on her stature. Why didn’t they just put an illustration of DJ with her friends, as she is the main protagonist? Secondly, if it is Persephone’s garden, it is supposed to look lush and vibrant. Instead the cover looks dull, and so does the character. It’s such a shame because the cover doesn’t do justice to the lovely story. Had I not received this for a review, I don’t think I would have picked it up based on the cover. It makes the book seem like this is a book for preschoolers.
Overall, this is a sweet and light-hearted middle grade book to read and I rate it 4/5 stars.

A wonderful story about DJ (Daisy) starting at a new school, moving into a new home, and facing the challenge of making new friends. I loved how Ms.Collins brought in the mythological character, Persephone. Very creative how plants, gardening, mythology, friends, and games were woven together. Well-written and edited. I might be far older than a teenager, but I sat down and kept turning the pages.

I'm very impressed with this young lady. The writing was really good and beautiful pictures were painted of each scene. I actually wish that the book was longer. This is a great story for children of all ages.I look forward to reading her next book.

Beautiful and heartwarming story of a girl named Daisy Jane. In the beginning it felt like another story about new girl in new town but as I moved forward it opened whole new dimension for me.
Daisy, sixth grader who moves into new town with her dad is not like her peers. She likes gardening more than spending her days in front of the screen.
It is beautifully written. Story moves us with innocent characters and their behaviour and reference of Greek mythology never felt so right. And it also teaches us important lesson. Lesson about how to stand up to our peers. Not to bully new kid in the school. And most importantly it teaches us about self worth, being happy in under one's own skin.
I really liked it and would recommend to all.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this and sharing it with my niece (11 yo) while I babysat! It’s a very heartwarming story written from the perspective of an 11 yo (or so) girl. An excellent tale about facing social anxiety and change in the kindest, nicest and yet most assertive way possible. The main character portrays a certain maturity, kindness, and sense of compassion mixed with humility worthy of admiration.
The story takes place in a very contemporary setting and takes you through every event in a very engaging and smooth matter. It mixes themes that teenagers are bound to face in every day life (like video games), while opening the door to different and interesting hobbies that nowadays we might not even consider for our kids. I don’t want to spoil it as I want every reader to be as pleasantly surprised as I was when I got to know more about Daisy.

Daisy, Bold & Beautiful" is a children's book by Ellie Collins. Even though Ellie is really young she has infused her love for Greek mythology into this book by allowing us to understand how the life of a child is very similar to the life of Persephone, the wife of Hades.
🦄🦄🦄
D.J., a sixth grader, has moved to a new neighourhood with her father, which means new people, new school and hopefully new friends. She does manage to make new friends (May, Payton and Lexi). But while they prefer to play video games which she doesn't enjoy, D.J. prefers gardening but is too embarrassed to tell them.
While taking a nap after her first day of school, she finds herself transported to a magical garden and meets Persephone. She helps D.J. understand and face the problems that she is going through and shows her that anything is possible if you take a chance. 🦄🦄🦄
I've read a lot of children's books (and I still do because its fun) and Ellie has got amazing writing skills. With time she could be one of the biggest authors out there.

I received a copy of this book through BookTasters. I am providing this review voluntarily.
TRIGGER WARNING: Brief mention of death of a parent
Daisy, Bold and Beautiful by Ellie G. Collins was a book that had fallen into my lap completely unexpectedly. Although I was actually planning to read a totally different book, I received this one and decided to give it a try. It was definitely one of my better impulsive choices.
The story seems pretty simple at first — a young girl is starting in a new school partway through sixth grade and is feeling anxious about it. I began to have doubts that this was the right story, since this sounded like a familiar story to me.
But the similarities ended there. D.J. ends up going to school and meeting up with a girl who is friendly right away and introduces her to some other girls. They absorb her into their social circle, and I liked the various personalities of the characters. They’re witty and smart kids. The only problem is that they like to play video games, while D.J. likes to be outside gardening. I enjoyed how this isn’t what I usually see in books: girls aren’t usually portrayed as Xbox gamers, and kids aren’t seen gardening too often.
The story only got more interesting as I got further into it. Middle grade isn’t a genre that I’m particularly fond of reading, but this one was a really good story. The characters were quirky and intelligent, and I found myself chuckling out loud as I read it. It incorporated the issues I recall from middle school (dealing with teachers, stressing over homework and tests, freaking out about making friends and talking to boys), and even worked in some elements of Greek mythology.
Imagine my surprise when I finished the book and discovered the blurb about the writer. It was written by someone when they were turning 11. I was really impressed — i’ve read books written by adults that weren’t this well-written, engrossing, or humorous. I couldn’t possibly be more impressed with this book. I’d definitely suggest this one for not just middle grade readers, but adults as well.

This was incredible, I cannot fault it, from the story, the characters, the character progression, the emotions included, to the creative inclusion of a Greek goddess, it was an incredibly well written book.
DJ was such a great protagonist, starting off feeling incredibly nervous and scared unsure how her life would be at this new school then instantly making friends with a great group of girls, then having the progression and confidence radiating from her as the story went on. I loved the character progression between their friendship too with them growing and learning to adapt in their interests and really getting to know each other better.
Persephone was such an interesting character and I loved how she was written in so creatively. Anytime DJ fell asleep with a Greek book open she got taken into a beautiful garden where they both helped each other with their struggles and enjoyed the beautiful garden they were in together.
I am so incredibly impressed by this story, it was so creative, I felt so many emotions whilst reading and felt like I was right there with the characters. All the characters were incredibly likeable, it was paced perfectly, the story was engaging and enjoyable to read.
Can I also note this was written by an eleven year old. That is utterly impressive, she has such a mature way of writing, knows how to plot and create a fantastic and engaging world. She is so incredibly talented and I hope she never gives up writing she has been blessed with a gift and I’d hope she’ll always continue making these wonderful worlds.
Now I really want to read the next two books in this series and this one was so incredibly good that I know the next two will be aswell.
Thank you so much to booktasters and Stephanie and Ellie Collins for the ebook to read and review.

“Daisy, Bold & Beautiful” is a sweet story geared for 9 to 12-year-old readers. Ms. Collins tells the story of a young girl D.J. who moves to a new town with her father, after her mother’s death. She has to start a new school and make new friends. It’s well-written and I could sympathize with her getting onto the bus knowing no one and heading for a new sixth grade experience. D.J. quickly makes friends and learns about herself along the way. I loved the relationship between father and daughter as well as her new friends. What makes this story so interesting is what happens when she goes to bed and her experiences in another realm. This book for middle grade readers drew me in, but the amazing part was it was written by a middle grade writer! This is a children’s book I highly recommend and a new author I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

Daisy Bold & Beautiful is a fun, quick read that 'tweens will love. It deals with many of the issues that every child can identify with: starting middle school in a strange city, trying to make new friends, and being afraid you won't fit in. But it delves deeper. What if all the cool kids at your new school invited you to join the popular clique, but their interests differed wildly from your own? What if your three new BFF's were expert gamers, talking about the latest strategies 24-7--and you didn't even own a television set?
Daisy is a lovable 'tween who faces all of these challenges when she moves with her single dad to a new city, right before the beginning of her first year in middle school. Shy Daisy is immediately welcomed into the popular girls' group, but is scared to admit she'd rather be planting seeds and growing beautiful flowers than punching buttons on a complicated handset and shouting at a screen. Then the Goddess of Spring, Persephone, enters Daisy's dreams, teaching her life lessons while offering advice. The two discuss everything from asking a cute boy in Science class to the dance, to finding the courage to face your fears and develop self-confidence.
Daisy Bold & Beautiful teaches young readers wonderful life lessons without ever being preachy. Kids who read this book will learn that you don't have to change who you are to fit in. That you should stand up for yourself and your beliefs, while also learning to compromise. That there's a life beyond playing video games, like enjoying the great outdoors and planting a secret garden. The then eleven-year-old author, Ellie Collins, did an amazing job of integrating these themes within a fast-paced and entertaining story.

This is a heart-warming story of a young girl who moves with her father to a new house and school. The story revolves around her early actions meeting the other kids and settling in. The story is a great one and young kids 9-12 years will enjoy it. I wholeheartedly recommend it to parents.

Excellent! From an eleven year old.
I enjoyed the way Daisy addresses her challenges of life; boldly she moves forward with new friends, despite all her negative thoughts. This book will help any child who faces changes. I recommend this book for 7-12-year-olds.

D.J. is facing a very difficult day. It’s her first day at a new school and it’s April Fool’s Day. She and her father moved into a new home closer to her Dad’s office after her mother died. The school year is nearly over and she is starting at a new middle school.
At the bus stop she meets another girl her age. Her new friend quickly moves to include D.J. in her group of friends. The new friends are nice but they are all video gamers and D.J. doesn’t even own a game console. That evening, after falling asleep reading about Greek mythology, D.J. finds herself in a beautiful garden chatting with Persephone. The Greek goddess offers insight into being a true friend.
Can D.J. become a part of this new group at school? Will she be accepted by others at school? Death of a parent, moving, middle school, and making new friends are difficult topics. D.J. struggles to deal with all of the changes in her life. Her characterization is excellent and she is very understandable and believable. The situations are realistic and meaningful. This is a book that will be enjoyed by young readers, parents and grandparents.
The author of this book was 11 when she wrote it. Fantastic! She has done a wonderful job telling a relevant story. I hope she continues her writing career and look forward to reading her next book. Well done Ellie Collins!

I believe every mother should read the book to school age children often enough that they remember the book . Its all about changes in life and things that happen to every one and how to handle these things. The book is well written, colourful and in most things touch on life. Congratulations on a book well written and hope there will be others

Storytelling is difficult, and it's commendable when a middle-schooler did it with a hold and authority. At the age of stories listening, the author Ellie Collins did an exceptional job by writing on pre-teen facing issues in such a way that anyone can read and grab it easily into their minds. Daisy, Bold & Beautiful is a fantastic fiction, combining current issues with Greek Mythology. It is an interesting read for everyone. It's a story of DJ, a teen girl who struggles to be accepted in the new place and her fight with her social fears which can be related by many growing up children's and adults. DJ's fight for her individuality and her perspective towards all new things enough attract readers attention. It also deals with today's gaming culture in kids. The pace of the story holds the readers perfectly and Ellie Collins wrote the characters in a very interesting way that the become very familiar to you in no time.

A whimsical and lighthearted tale, Daisy Bold & Beautiful spins the yarn of a young woman starting over in a new school part way through the year, who is lucky enough to make some new friends both in our world and another. The story covers Daisy’s first week and shows her to be plucky and independent, finding her own relationships with both romantic interests and mentors despite the feelings of her new friends. While the timing feels slightly rushed, this can be forgiven considering the author was 11 herself when she wrote the book. An excellent gift for any appreciator of mythology or adventurous and kind hearted young readers stories, please give Daisy Bold & Beautiful a try!

Firstly, I am very impressed that someone so young has managed to sustain an idea to create an entire story. There are some lovely descriptions and great detail in regards to the flowers and plants encountered in the story. The messages around starting a new school and overcoming fears of being different with friends are another good aspect. A simple read that will suit some young adults going through a similar time in their lives.

Daisy, Bold and Beautiful was written by the young author Ellie Collins.
The main character of the book is DJ, a sixth grader who has moved away from all the things that are familiar with her father. She has a passion for gardening, which she inherited by her late mother, but isn't sure if her new friends she has met on the first day will still appreciate her if she tells them about her passion. Through school work, she befriends the goodness Persephone who is in a similar situation.
For me, as a non american it was really cool to read about an actual school life in the U.S.. I only knew it from movies, and Miss Collins gives a great view into the school life. Also I felt connected to DJ, for I was invited to serval gaming dates and had no clue what the game was about! It wasn't really pleasant and I felt like DJ(serval point thought the story).
At first I was a little suspicious about this book, for I found the first 2 chapters dry.
After learning more about the other characters the story got more interesting. I liked the way DJ acted, for I found a little of myself in it.
Considering that this was written by a 11 year old you can really feel the feelings, enter the sixth grade culture, attitudes, and language.
I wished this book would have been a littler longer, but I see there are plenty other books by this author to enjoy!
