Feelings Forecasters: A Creative Approach to Managing Emotions

Rate this book
Explores emotional intelligence using the weather as an analogy to teach kids strategies to prevent emotional pollution and protect themselves from negativity!

Emotions are like the weather. Which meteorological conditions occur most often in your inner world? Are there any that you are really afraid of? How do you respond when you feel out of control? And if another person is out of control, how do you react? In this revolutionary approach to emotional education, we learn that our emotions affect our inner and outer climate. They can improve or poison it, affecting our ecosystem and that of our family, school, and friends. Through stories and activities, children learn how to make a beautiful umbrella to protect them from all kinds of "rain," along with strategies for preventing emotional "pollution" and avoiding "tsunamis" and "acid rain." The activities, which include a guide for mentors and teachers, help children become sustainable and creative people, increasing the quality of their personal relationships and the world in which they live.

Feelings Forecasters/ Relationship Navigators by Maria Mercé Conangla & Jaume Soler is comprised of five chapters teaching children about 'emotional ecology’. The lessons teach children how to recognise what they are feeling, what it might mean, and how to handle it, along with the consequences of remaining blind to your denser emotions and what they are trying to tell you. Each chapter has a series of exercises, each with reflection questions and considerations. The beginning of each chapter also has lessons on environmental ecology that are relevant to the chapter topics. I like the use of weather and weather protection imagery of Feelings Forecasters, and the nature inspired imagery of Relationship Navigators. Even though those aren't my first analogy choice, they are good ones, and imagery of any kind is how the subconscious learns and works best. If we want lasting change, it has to come from there, not our conscious thinking. These are clearly books for teachers, rather than ones to be read by children themselves. That being the case, a little more guidance for the teacher may be helpful. Unless the teacher is a psychologist, or exceptionally skilled at emotional intelligence, they are likely to stumble while helping kids with some tasks since many adults are not savvy to their own emotional undercurrents either. I wasn't a huge fan of the artwork. It's not a style that really resonated with me.

Having a copy of "Feelings Forecaster" by psychologists Maria Merce Conangla & Jaume Soler is like owning an emotional almanac for you and your child. It serves as a road map for them to follow along as they navigate the downpour and changing climate of their big, tumultuous feelings. One part children’s book, one part teacher's manual, as a satisfying whole it provides children with a relatable storyline incorporating engaging, mindful exercises.

It’s beautifully illustrated, and every page jumps out with bold expressions, cute characters, and a consistent color theme. The book is divided into five full chapters, each posing self-reflective questions along with activities to practice that help you and the child work through emotional struggles. Whether it’s tsunamis of sadness or the acid rain from a toxic environment, “Feelings Forecaster” is a helpful tool to weather the storms of emotional development.
