Instructional strategies for physical education

Rate this book
The purpose of this book is to help teachers and prospective teachers acquire the skills necessary to design and implement effective instructional programs in physical education. Effective programs require both effective instruction and a balanced curriculum. Either one without the other result in failure to educate students physically. Therefore, it is essential that prospective teachers be instructed in both aspects of the physical education program included in this book-curriculum and instruction. Unit one provides an introduction to the teaching world. Unit two presents the theory essential to an understanding of the learning process. This is followed in unit three by a presentation of the skills essential to the instructional process. This serves as a basis for both curriculum and instruction. Effective classroom management is presented in unit four. Unit five takes a prospective teacher through the process of curriculum design and the evaluation of the instructional program. The book follows the progression usually followed in teaching undergraduate physical education majors. That is, it assumes that lesson and unit planning and basic instructional skills are prerequisites to an understanding of the curriculum. It is suggested that students apply the principles taught by actually writing lessons and units and designing a curriculum as suggested in the various units of the text. In this way the entire process will be more meaningful to the learner. Although the text is written on an undergraduate level, it can be used at the graduate level as well by supplementing the text with the suggested activities and readings at the end of each chapter. It is also suggested that graduate students actually form committees and design a resource unit and the school curriculum.
