Gift of St. Francis

The Gift of St. Francis is an inviting, appealing, informative introduction to St. Francis and his time. His prophetic message continues to have a universal appeal, and this book presents the legacy of St. Francis in stories, prayers, and 'pilgrimage' to the places made holy by Francis. The delicate drawings and skilled calligraphy of illustrator Lynne Muir emphasize the contemplative experience that is another of St. Francis' gifts.

Perhaps no other saint has been popularized to become the image of the faith as Saint Francis. Yet most of us have not learned a lot about him. This book helps to paint a beautiful picture of his life, enriching the reader with contemplation as well as history.

This six-by-six-inch volume briefly describes the region of Italy in Francis’s time, touching on his early experiences and personal revelations that led to his decision to give up everything to follow Christ. Early followers are mentioned, including Clare, who would also form a religious order and be named a saint. There are stories about Francis’s many journeys.

More than a history, this delightfully illustrated book clarifies some of Francis’s inner spiritual insights and struggles with religious life. The text helps the reader marvel at Francis’s example while contemplating one’s own spiritual journey. Written by two Anglican priests, the book also offers a unique insight into understanding the ecumenical appeal Francis’s life has enabled up to and including our modern culture.

I look forward to keeping this little book by my side for its prayers and inspiration. Saint Francis, pray for us!

Despite its appearance, The Gift of Saint Francis doesn't seem particularly well-suited to children. The prose was accessible enough, and each page was balanced well with text and illustrations. But the organizing principle guiding its structure was so idiosyncratic that few children (and fewer adults) could find themselves absorbed in the book. Instead of a narrative structure, it was more like one or two page section on various aspects of Francis's life and world--thrown together without any connective tissue, all higgledy-piggledy. The calligraphy and medieval style of the illustrations is the most notable achievement, and nearly redeems the book. The book does not get in the way of its subjects humanity, but for me, it made no new contribution to my affinity for Saint Francis.
