Liability tells the story of Doug, a recovering alcoholic who hits a young boy who runs a red light on his bike at an intersection. As Doug's guilt grows, so too does his obsession with the boy's father--and the father's lack of grief.

He is the recipient of the 2017 Editor’s Reprint Award and Columbia University’s Bennett Cerf Memorial Prize for fiction, and is a recent finalist for the Mary McCarthy Prize, the Calvino Prize, and the Autumn House Fiction Prize, among other awards. “Liability” originally appeared in slightly different form in Swink.
