Four Years Later is an introspective into the poet's own life. She describes what it was like to move to the Oregon Coast, work for low pay, and struggle. Every poem is related because they are all related to her but each has it's own voice. If you love modern poetry, I am confident you will enjoy these poems. My favorite poems were “High and Low” and “Anything.” I like that the poems are arranged so that you start out with her feelings at the beginning of her journey, the fear and instability in the height of the struggle, and the relief at the end of it.
There are a few aesthetic issues that I didn't like. There is an inconsistent amount of spaces between the title and the poems. It's not a big deal but it's something that bothered me in something like poetry where the spacing is important. A few of the longer poems could have been shorter to make them more appealing to the eye without losing important lines.
Overall, I liked the poems and I sympathize with the journey. I'm sure anyone who has ever taken the leap to step out on their own in life, without support, will understand the feeling that you might drown at any time. This would be a good book to have on your coffee table or to enjoy on a beach vacation curled up in a blanket with some coffee.
I received the book for free from the author but the opinion is my own and I did not receive payment in exchange for this review.
